Bought a new cable that was supposed to be a 1.4 one. made no difference

Have you got any other HDMI cables plugged into the amp?

I found that as soon as I connected my A C Ryan Media Player it killed sound on all the HDMI inputs. Apparently it's a known problem with A C Ryan Players.

No other HDMI cables in the amp.

Have you tried any apps like YouTube, or Netflix?

No, I haven't tested with apps, just normal broadcast TV originating from the HDMI cable from the Sky box

OK. I think first, you should try to see if you can get sound from the TV itself to work over ARC. That is to say, sound when using the TVs inbuilt tuner or one of the TVs apps (Netflix etc) This would reduce it to simply a problem with ARC if that doesn't work. If that does work, then it would have to do with how the TV passes signals being input to it via HDMI.

The way you are testing currently, it may be that the sound coming from the Sky box via HDMI into the TV is not being output back over ARC to the receiver, (even though this is how it's supposed to work). Or it might be that the Sky box is outputting Dolby Digital to the TV and that the TV doesn't 'downmix' this for output over ARC. You could try outputting PCM from the Sky box and see if that then works.

Failing that, you may be stuck with having to output via optical from the TV to the receiver. Even then there's no guarantee that the TV will output 5.1 even if that is what is being input via HDMI, (some only output 2.0 from external sources.)

Having a look at this may help if I haven't explained correctly:

Thanks for that tangerz. I have now tried youtube app to ARC and still get nothing at the amp. Tried many different settings but may be there is one I haven't tried!

Think toslink is only sure way with these two devices. Guess no disadvantage versus ARC.

Cheers.

Yes disadvantage - with ARC the TV's remote control will change the audio systems volume. With optical it just does nothing.

Also the TV speakers will turn back on when you turn the amp off, and turn off when the amp is turned on all by itself.

Vol ctrl is not an issue as my Harmony remote will be told what device controls volume but speaker control could be dodgy.

Another problem found today. Connecting the BTT370 HDMI OUT to ANY TV HDMI socket causes the BTT370 to only output audio to the L and R front speakers. No centre and no woofer (rear spkrs are not connected). This, even with the TV off.

This is a darn nuisance as listening to the radio on the BTT370 is much better with the centre working. No matter what settings I fiddle with, still only get L and R. Pull the HDMI, immediately get 3 front and woofer going.

Curious what signal from all the HDMI sockets the BTT370 could be working with?

NB Not an ARC problem (seemingly!) as all sockets give the problem and ARC is turned off in BTT370.

Sounds like the BTT370 is mostly your problem.  No new firmwares available for it?

As an aside that may or may not be relevant, I also had problems with the TV speakers when passing the audio to an external sound system that was controlled by a Harmony. The solution for me was not to silence them with the mute or any menu setting, but just to turn them all the way down (since they would never be used). That stopped all the confusing 'smart' nonsense from getting in the way.
