I'm pretty sure you can't add existing disks with data into a Synology nas as they will get formatted

Where the Synology NAS might have an issue is with transcoding, but if the Sony can direct play the media then it's not an issue

Why can't you just plug the USB hub into the TV with the HDD's connected to the hub, then just use VLC or Kodi to play the media from them

Also, is this the most appropriate forum to show you downloading media from questionable sources?

Interesting, so if we got the DS916+ (or similar) we'd need to install a new set of discs into it, and copy the media library to the NAS then... thats fine & we can do that.

What we can't reasonably manage to do, is attach USB3.0 hubs & media library HDD's & all the associated power bricks etc whatnot to the back of the (flush mounted) TV, there's simply no room, unless we were screwing brackets/discs/shelves all over the wall, which is basically a space thats entirely filled by the TV... theres only about 30mm from the edge of the TV to the edges of the actual wall on either side, we need to get this panel to play the media wirelessly.

We recognise it would be excellent if it were possible to 'fish' a cable from the internet connection/Wi-Fi router/Modem/NAS to the wall thats got the TV panel on it but that would require remodelling the place quite, er... intensively.

We're going to try Kodi/PLEX, see if we can setup a spare (MacBook Pro) laptop, attach some of this media to it, and see if Kodi/PLEX can be installed on the MacBook Pro & the X9300D and if it will stream/play... if that works satisfactorily then are we correct in thinking that we could do the same with the media all sitting on the floor in a DS916+ (or similar) that we attach to the HG659B fibre/router/modem and that we'll be able to stream the films across the room ~3 metres to the X9300D?

Again - thanks for all the expert assistance / advice... googling this afternoon, it seems to be wholly unclear to us if a NAS like the DS916+ and the TV (SONY X9300D) will actually work together that well using a Wi-Fi LAN thats operating off of the WiFi router/model HG659B thats showing 85Mbs... it might not work...

The Kodi/VLC apps do not require any additional servers. Just point the TV to the NAS location and watch.

How are you checking what channels the other wireless are on? 5GHz has 4 20MHz channels that will end up being the same 80MHz channel when 802.11ac is used. Any network on any of those channels which is 80MHz will interfere with yours, or make it back off to a lower speed. Wifi analyser on some android phones will show the width of other networks, but most devices just show the base 20MHz channel and the rest looks free but is not.

If you can use the DFS channels then they seem to be totally clear most places I look, but not all gear will connect to them. Fritzboxes will be an AP on them, but you might find your TV cant use it or that your phones will not see it and will just sit on 2.4Ghz with the resulting useless performance.

Jaxson: cheers, so... next/1st thing we will need to do is check & see if the install Kodi or VLC apps are on the SONY X9300D and if not install one of them… we’ve used VLC extensively in the past so might start there… thing is, we attached HDD’s to the HG659B (as we have done in the past with various routers and played mp4's using VLC/Apple TV) but this time, we couldn’t find a way to get the X9300D to ‘discover’ any discs attached to the USB3.0 ports on the router/modem… they were there, and quite visible to MacBook Pro’s in the sidebar under ‘SHARED’ and we could read/write & play on these discs on the MacBook Pro’s but we could not get the X9300D to discover the discs while they were attached to the HG659B router/modem

richms: checking the Wi-Fi using WiFi Explorer and WiFi Signal App’s. The 2Ghz & 5Ghz networks coming from the HG659B are called different names, we have only entered the 5Ghz network into the TV & other devices, so we are on 5Ghz.... how to tell that the TV is using Wireless AC we’re unsure? We’ve placed the 5Ghz channel on 80Mhz of width and up on Ch. 60 and nothing else is there using Ch. 60 5Ghz that we can see.

So, got to attach some media discs to the laptop, and see if using VLC (or Kodi) we can stream across the room... see if the X9300D will 'discover' the media discs.

Note: HG659B is Wireless AC. SONY X9300D is Wireless AC. But think Apple (late) 2011 MacBook Pro is just Wireless N.

Note: Work out how to check that HG659B & X9300D are communication on Wireless AC (WiFi Explorer App says the 5Ghz Channel is Wireless AC.

Have you thought about setting it up in the room behind? If it's only 40mm thick then taking a (hopefully obscured) faceplate off the power on the TV side should show you the inside of the gib on the other side (or better yet, another PowerPoint ontheother side?)

If this is the case, swapping out your Power faceplate for one with integrated cat/coax points (or if hidden just the holes for these?) should allow you to use cat5/6 for the NAS box sitting on the other side?

Ch 60 and 80MHz is going to be using 52 thru to 64 of the 20MHz ones.

Try between 100 and 144 if it is available on your router and the TV will see it.

Hard to explain, venue is a small hi-rise apartment & yep pity its roomy 5 bed in the 'burbs & theres just not much spare room anywhere for cabling, power blocks, and discs etc to be sort of hanging round willy nilly... theres physically nothing, apart from a few small squares of carpet at the foot of the bed, physically nothing, nowhere to stick a NAS, or practically anything else for that matter behind the wall in the '2nd room' as there is less than 1 metre from the foot of the bed to the back of the thin wall :)

It really has to be wireless, or it's going to be kinda messy.. we (perhaps wrongly) thought a 100Mbs Fibre Connection / Wireless AC equipped Modem-Router could stream attached HDD's storing mp4 media 3 metres across the room to the Wireless AC equipped SONY.

Maybe the answer can only be, have cables hanging down, to discs on the ground, or a small Media Console... even then it'd be 'remote' from the internet access so still not even hardwired.. nothing is ideal at all.

Have to see 1st if the old MBP 2011 will stream, discs attached to it... have to see if the X9300D will see them, surely, surely it must, then surely it will be expected to read the same discs attached to the HG659B modem/router and if it can read them then maybe something can play them... we did try for 2 nights, but couldn't get the SONY to recognise the 5Tb Seagates, our even USB Memory Sticks while attached to the HG659B

Think it'd be easy lol

Bother, not able to check on the router right now, but 'yip', the HG659B definitely is capable of broadcasting 5Ghz on the WiFi channels up in the 140'ish area, that '3rd band' (or '2nd' of the 5Ghz bands).

Are Ch 36 - 60 are less powerful watt wise than Ch100-165 or something, do I need to go to that Wiki page & see which channels are broadcast the strongest? Or is it that the TV may only 'see' the Ch100-164 & not see Ch36-60 etc ?

+1 for Plex. VLC and Kodi both take a bit of stuffing around to set up and looking for the library.

Put Plex Media Server on your NAS and Plex for Android on your TV and enjoy.

Plex Server can be configured through a browser window and makes life easier than trying to store/modify a library stored in an app on your TV (also takes care of shares and mapped network drives).

My Plex Server has a library consisting of thousands of files on NAS, 2TB and 1TB external USB HDDs connected to a laptop and a 3TB plugged into my router, and seamlessly shows them in one big library.

Photos, TV, Movies. All accessible from any plex client in my house... TV, tablets, laptops.

Voda HG659B Wireless AC Fibre Router Modem USB3.0 ports do not work with HDD's over 2TB, the specs/manual omit mention of this... we wasted many many hours trying different combinations and formatting discs & trying different types of files in an attempt to steer the X9300D to media attached to this device.... as well, during multiple calls the ISP's Support Staff never mentioned once the HG659B would not work with anything over 2TB.

Ok - we have done some testing, and wireless is not capable of the job... we tried the bands up in the 100-128 range but the X930D cannot see them so we are using Ch 60. We turned off the 2.4Ghz chanel so only broadcasting 5Ghz.

Current WiFi seen by laptop while laptop is casting 720 to panel:

Deleting the 2.4Ghz channel off of the HG659B seemingly helped, all tests now give 100Mbs even while casting is going on... just wonder though, have we got the MCS/Guard Interval etc all set appropriately?

So, anyway... you guys were right, nothing works wireless with 50Gb+ MP4 files streaming at 65Mbs+ not PLEX not Kodi nothing... you must need faster better wireless & you definitely need better applications/programs so...

So we are going to cut up some marble tiles, carpeting & underlays etc & chop a few holes in that wall the tv is on & running cabling to the panel from the HG659B and NAS.

We're going to buy today either a Synology Quad Core 8Gb RAM 916+ or a QNAP Quad Core 8Gb RAM TS-453A

Can someone help us decide which to get, what interconnects to utilise, reason we're asking is the QNAP offering has an HDMI output.

How do you set this up, do you just connect the router to the NAS with CAT6 ethernet, then run CAT6 from the NAS to the TV... does the TV get Internet access and the MP4 media this way..

I mean... what do you use to run these 60Gb MP4 files to a TV off of a NAS with, what cabling exactly, can MP4 files AND interest all get to the TV off of the NAS or...?
