As of Saturday night, when my Onkyo died with a loud pop, I'm in the market for a new receiver.

I think mine is heading that way too.  It does a lot of crackling when it switches on the HDMI and sometimes it shuts down as a result.

My TX-NR515 started not switching on at all, at least intermittently. I'm very happy with the Yamaha RX-V585 I replaced it with

I've preordered a Yamaha RX-V6A for myself - I'm hoping it arrives this month

I have listed both av receivers on my website if anyone is interested in ordering. Discounted rate at the moment just to see who's interested.

Feel free to ask any questions or comments. I'm keeping the shop to minimum to save confusion but let me know if you would like any prices on sonos/yamaha/onkyo/klipsch/kef/b&w/marantz gear.

Nice, it actually looks like a piece of electronics from this century. And it has more than 1 HDMI 2.1 port as well.

Hopefully other OEMs take note and stop releasing the same basic designs.

I was very excited when I saw these announced, great option to go with my planned new TV and PS5.

But now I find myself wondering if I will actually notice a difference in performance over my current RX-A760. My biggest concern was that my current receiver may not deliver the full video capability of the PS5.

Is that something I should be concerned about? Are there other obvious improvements I am ignoring?

Appreciate any advice.

Presuming that you are getting a TV that supports the full HDMI 2.1 spec, you will be limited to 4k HDR @ 60fps by running it through your current AVR, and no variable refresh rate either (Or convenice features like ALLM etc). Given that 4k60fps will most likely be the performance target for the majority of next gen games, YMMV on how much that matters to you.

In that case, I would just plug the PS5 directly into the TV and ARC back to the receiver. Not the greatest sound-wise, since your AVR missed out on eARC, but it will work (80% of the time).

Unless you need/want any other AVR features right now, or are ok with the extra financial outlay, I would hold fire for now tbh. Not to mention that Sony has not been forthcoming with how the whole Tempest thing will be implemented.

Thanks for the advice. It's almost like you predicted it perfectly.

I hooked up my new LG CX last week and the arc has been working perfectly, with 1 button turning on both receiver and TV.

Then tonight all of a sudden the connection seems broken. I can get picture into the TV via the receiver, but no audio out of the TV. I wonder if this is one of those 20% of times ARC may be failing me?

Everything appears to be turned on correctly, but doesn't seem to be helping.

And just when I thought I had checked every setting seven times, the old turn everything off at the wall and try again did the trick.

What firmware are you running? Version 1.23 has been mentioned on-line a few times.

Also - ARC sucks the big one for me.

Version 2.65.

Yeah ARC is fantastic when it works, but when it doesn't... boy it causes headaches.

I had this same routine with streaming apps on my LG TV and Onkyo AVR whenever ARC stopped working (usually once a week). The only way I resolved my issues was to buy an Nvidia Shield and go Shield -> AVR -> TV. Haven't had nearly as many issues.

If you are looking at a new AVR, it seems like eARC is a bit more robust, but has had some implementation issues (recent LG OLEDs were only allowing 2 audio channels through, though I believe that has been fixed now).

I've just bought myself an 55" OLED CX and read it doesn't support DTS via eARC? Anyone else confirm?

And not likely to be fixed either.

Filed under "features that will never be delivered via firmware updates":

DTS/DTS-HD audio is not passed via eARC - LG was notified about this issue, hopefully, they will provide a fix via a future firmware update - We have further indirect info from LG: It's not a bug, they are not supporting it, just like Samsung - so it's not going to be fixed!;

Apparently it doesn't have an internal decoder either, so they are basically saving GTFO to DTS codecs.
