Noticed the new Yamaha AV receivers spotted earlier in the year have been announced overseas.

Not sure on a local release date yet.

RX-V4A

RX-V6A

This site had a good overview:

I'm looking to get the RX-V6A based on local price. Will update when I have a hands on.

I am probably going to upgrade later in the year as my RX-V3800 is getting a bit long in the tooth. Audio is still magnificent, it doesn't support 4k though

Given I bought an RX-V585 a fortnight ago this was inevitable. Grumble grumble....

Love the look of them. Looks like a Hi End Japanese Integrated from the 80s.

Thanks for the reply.

Price and availability may change but so far local RRP from dealer (NZD$) looks like:

RXV6A

Available from late september

$1499 RRP

RXV4A

From mid-november

$999 RRP

I'll have to get one before the PS5. I would also preorder as I'm sure stock will be limited. Haven't seen any reviews up yet...

I'm certainly interested to have a play - the ability to lock the front panel to stop kids / significant others from meddling with buttons seems like something some of my friends could do with...

FlatpanelsHD has also confirmed that both have multiple HDMI 2.1 capable ports; 3 on the RXV6A, all 4 on the RXV4A. so a point for Yamaha.

I'd also missed that the RXV6A has atmos support as well (I'm going to assume 5.1.2). With the stereo pre-out as well, it's shaping up to be a neat little unit for the price.

A few features are listed as depending on a future firmware upgrade.  How reliable are Yamaha in this regard?

RapalloAV has a listing for the RX-V4A at $999, on back-order until mid-November according to them.

They seem to support their products for longer than most from what I have seen.

As of Saturday night, when my Onkyo died with a loud pop, I'm in the market for a new receiver. 5.2 and 4 HDMI inputs is fine for my needs and I want to spend under $1k.

Having been stranded on HDMI 1.4 with a previous receiver, getting on board with HDMI 2.1 early is appealing.

I'm struggling to find much better than this for the price. The only real competition is the RX-V485 at $868 or AVR-X550BT for $891. The premium on the RX-V4A seems well worth it over these older non-HDMI 2.1 models. Am I missing anything?

The AVRX550 is a bluetooth amp only.

The RXV485 and RXV4A are both network capable - so you can stream Airplay 2 / Tidal, Deezer, Net Radio, Spotify Connect (free+Premium), net radio, DLNA etc.

The other bonus is that network AVR's are more likely to receive updates that will help with things like eARC compatibility etc.

They all seem around the same power... and have similar sorts of inputs.

But as you said, only one offers HDMI 2.1.

So yeah -

Thanks. That totally rules out the Denon for me. I don't much care about the streaming features - have a Kodi box/Chromecast for that - but being able to control it via a phone app is essential, as are firmware updates.

Denons seem to be particularly poor value in NZ. That is a pretty basic feature to be missing from a nearly $900 amp. Especially one released in 2018...

I like the look of the V4A more and more. I guess I'll wait til it's released in November and then see if there are any particularly good clearouts on 2019 models in the pre-Christmas sales.

I think mine is heading that way too.  It does a lot of crackling when it switches on the HDMI and sometimes it shuts down as a result.

I’ve recently become a local Yamaha dealer so pm if you’re interested I’ll set up PayPal purchasing. May be able to offer discounts for Geekzone members. I’d prefer to get hands on with both Yamaha units before taking preorders but contact me if you’re interested

Condolences in advance. Mine was 5 years old - right at that awkward spot where it's too old to make a CGA claim or to justify an expensive repair, but new enough that you'd really have preferred it to keep working for a few more years before being forced to upgrade.

This is the third Onkyo/Pioneer I've had die at five years or less. Won't be buying one again. A shame as their pricing is far sharper in NZ than most of the alternatives.

Might take you up on that!
