I think you folks all missed lots of bits in the linked article, so I will shorten it to a single paragraph:

The Onkyo part of the business that made sold their own devices (marketing and brand) was sold as described earlier in this thread. The brand Onkyo will continue but it will no longer be manufactured by the original Onkyo company. The manufacturer company, which used to make their own devices is now closing its doors, following the part of the business that used to make devices for OEM brands and closed earlier this year.

Two Onkyo subsidiaries that handled original equipment manufacturing -- such as assembling speakers for other brands -- and sales representation of audio equipment filed for voluntary bankruptcy in March.

Since then, Onkyo has essentially stopped doing business except management of an already-sold subsidiary. The company told Nikkei it "tried to maintain business on a smaller scale, but could not stop cash-flow problems from worsening."

The company sold its core home audiovisual business to Sharp and U.S.-based Voxx International and its earphones and headphones business to an investment fund, both in September. A joint venture between Sharp and Voxx is expected to continue using the Onkyo brand.

MikeB4: Not surprising. A walk around and electronics store and there are very little traditional style Hifi equipment. We have a stereo system that now seldom gets used. We are currently looking for a streaming type system like Sonos.

That's mostly due to component shortages plus NZ not being top of the list for suppliers. It's not due to lack of demand.

Correct - although big box stores would treat HiFi as a 'replacement' category and not an area of their business where they actively try to talk people into investing (it's much easier to say "buy the sound bar from your TV manufacturer so that it all works"...

I saw a stat on an overseas site that said home theatre component demand is back to levels from 5-7 years ago (much higher), but I'm sure sound bars are 'up' even more!

In NZ, most products from the likes of Onkyo etc will be sold by C.I. types, HiFi stores and the electrical wholesalers - all businesses who have taken the market away from big box stores like JB HiFi / HN etc.
