I have a chromecast with google tv, paired with a "dumb" 4K veon tv from the warehouse.

Honestly, the out-of the box experience with the Chromecast with google tv is pretty average. So many ads on the stock launcher.

While i liked the device (having a physical remote is awesome!), installing a 3rd party launcher (recommend F-Launcher) and de-bloating a bit makes it an incredible device, and great value.

Just my 10c though. I only use it for Emby and Netflix, and the occasional youtube. Plenty of power and handles 10 bit 4K x265 video like a champ, you can also add a USB C dock that supports power delivery if you wanted to hardwire it via Ethernet too

I used to used the MiBox and found it really good.  I haven't used mine for a few years though, so I don't know if they still work well.

Many thanks for the wealth of suggestions.

Picked up a CCWGTV from PBTech.  Commissioning it was relatively painless (but I don't know how anybody without grandchildren would get on ;-).  Installed Kodi.

@cjkbarnett, the USBC dock sounds interesting - any recommendations?  I noticed on my first play with the Chromecast last night that I'm getting occasional freezes so I might look at getting a wired connection to it.

The USB C dock I have is this one here (I can't seem to post a link)

Works a treat with an apple 20w usb c charger.
Ran into a few weird issues trying other power supplies, but this one seems to work fine.

They would buy an Apple TV.
