I wouldn't. I think the conventional geekzone advice now is to buy the best panel you can. Then let Chromecast/Apple TV do all the heavy lifting.

I used to have the Redbull TV app on my LG. Then for whatever reason, the app vanished, due to some licensing agreement ending. And there was nothing I could do about it. I still have plenty of apps that function on the TV, but the updated Chromecast (I forget which one it actually is) is so much nicer to use, so we only use that now.

Assuming the TV keeps on ticking I can probably ignore any updates from LG.

I am not really considering buying a new television I am just frustrated that "smart TV" that is less than a year old is turning into a dumb TV. I thought it was only Panasonic did this sort of rubbish.

I have an Apple 4K , good device rubbish remote including the new version of the Siri remote.

I have the Chromecast with TV ii might have to retrieve it from the garage.

I have considered the Nvidia Shield Pro but it's aging now so not sure if it's up to date and fully supported.

My LG TV remote is able to control my Apple TV. Are you sure yours can't do the same?

Last evening I finally lost patience with the TV when both TVNZ+ and Disney+ refused to work. I did a factory reset and set the TV up as new. Reloaded the Apps, adjusted all the video, display, sound settings and what sundry stuff I could remember. What a pain in the butt.

Anyway after doing all that in my usual calm manner the Apps were all working. I haven't tested it this morning and my wife said not to until she is home this evening, somehow she is concerned for the safety of the TV should it not be working on, I don't really understand her concerns.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Its a bit of a learning curve the Apple TV remote,but once you get past that its great. The newer remotes have made it even better in my opinion. Even the missus thinks they are great. I run an ATV 4K on every TV in the house and also at the Mother in laws house. Shes in her 70s and loves the remote after getting past that learning curve. IOS 17 has also added some great features to the Apple TV box as well.

Remote controls have been around for a few decades now, Apple seem to have put a lot of effort into making the worse remote control ever. I know they like a minimalist design ethos but in somethings less is not always more.

I got excited too soon. Last night various Apps we not to poop again, namely TVNZ+ and Disney+. So annoying. My wife reconnected the Google Chromecast with TV and those Apps worked ok.

We were in Harvey Norman yesterday and my wife was looking at the TVs. I get the feeling she is looking at replacement as she does not have a lot of patience with tech that does not work properly.

Why not just use your Apple TV device? I have just bought a new LG TV but it has never occurred to me to try any of the built in apps as I am already familiar with the Apple TV and it seems to work well.

@MikeB4 Just adding a vote for this idea - and as @alasta said earlier, our 2021 C1 LG remote also controls our ATV 4K - if you want to avoid the agreed crap of the ATV remote. All of the apps you have referred to should be available on ATV.

(I have found the latest version of the ATV remote is slightly less awful to use if I disable the touch function and use it as click-only).

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Thanks for the tip, I forgot that the horrible touch mode could be disabled. I will give Apple TV a try again

As suggested by others, it's best to just regard the TV as a dumb display panel and use a third party device for your apps.

Samsung/LG/SONY/Panasonic etc are only going to support their TVs for a couple of years and you will find the TV apps will eventually stop working.

They want you to buy a new TV.....

A good TV panel should have a fairly long service life - longer than the app support.

I have a 50" 2009 Panasonic plasma and have been running an Amazon Fire TV (was a Gen 1 device - now a stick), and with HDMI-CEC (called various names by manufacturers), I can control the switching On/Off TV and volume etc via the AFTV remote. It has the local apps as well as a handful of overseas ones I use.

I would NEVER consider the 'smart' aspects of a TV when I replace it.

The Amazon Fire TV stick comes in 2 models - The HD (1080p) model for about $49 and the 4k model (a new 2023 model has just been released) at $129.

The AFTV gets my vote over the Chromecast with Google TV because there were quite a few apps that werent available for the CCwGTV and it was a pain installing any 'non NZ' apps.

I agree. I never use the apps, DTV receiver, network interface or built in speakers. I don't like having to pay for all that stuff that simply duplicates superior equipment that I already own.

I know it's a matter of personal preference, but I find the current generation Apple TV remote really good when the touch sensitive control is disabled.

We have been using the Apple TV with the touch feature disabled. All the Apps are working fine and the remote is a lot better with the touch feature disabled. I hope this continues.
