I had a Yamaha receiver and a Phillips sound bar, then an lg tv and TCL android tv. No combination of amp and soundbar has worked well using arc, every one has some form of issue.

The Yamaha receiver hates DD+ codecs and refuses to play them 95% of the time.

The Phillips soundbar doesn't power on and off properly using arc and is unreliable finding its source.

I ended up using optical on them both. The best combination was lg tv to the Yamaha where k managed to fudge it and it got confused so controlled like arc but transmitted over optical.

I've just got a JBL 1000 waiting to be opened today so let's see if eARC performs any better for me.

Can I ask what model AVR you have? That must be a VERY old Yamaha AVR if it doesn't handle Dolby Digital Plus...

Did you update the firmware?

We have a HTR-3065 but I haven't tried a firmware update, I looked a few years back but couldn't find much in the way of updates. The issue wasn't that it can't receive DD+, through the HDMI inputs it works but can't pass through HDR that I'd want from some devices so that wasn't a good option. Using the ARC connection it just doesn't work properly, it won't decode the codec, there's some methods that can be done to force it to play it but if you change episode it goes back to silence and you have to redo them to get it back. It did this on both the lg and TCL TVs so it's definitely the receiver at fault. On the LG we got it to use optical with HDMI control to just live with DD which as it was only 5.1 was a fine solution, unfortunately the Google interface in the TCL lacks any good sound output optionsand if you muted the speakers it only sent out stereo through optical. If the TVs did true hd it would be fine but it's just DD+ that's the issue and unfortunately that's the codec of choice for streaming platforms to do 5.1.

We had it a good few years and got it for a good price off marketplace so got more than ours money worth out of it. Nice to upgrade now from 5.1 to the JBL that feels more engrossing sound wise and adds the additional height channels. We'll either shove it back on the LG tv in the bedroom and ditch the annoying soindbar or see if we can shift it on marketplace.

I have a 2022 Samsung TV and a Samsung soundbar that is probably 4 or 5 years old now.

When I bought this TV, I simply plugged the HDMI cable in to the correct ports and it just worked - the TV remote controls everything (including basic functions on Sky). Have never had a problem with it.

I have these here and the flat soundbars can stay at the dealer. With the additional phono input (MM), the ARC connection and the active system, I don't even need an audio amplifier. It could hardly be more compact. 👍

2017 LG TV + Sonos Beam Sound bar via ARC = works 100% of the time, was very easy to setup.
