Have you tried unplugging your TV and DVD player from the wall for a time?

Does the DVD player support component cable? The quality from that is good.

Does the upscaling take effect if you use anything else except HDMI ? :-/

xpd: HDMI connection would be clearer than the usual RCA/Svideo connection..... Id still try taking it back to DSE, its obviously one of their players, just say it was a gift and the reciept isnt around anymore, they may help you out.

Slightly OT but can't help but notice you don't have many gold trophies yet Gavin haha :)

1 toddler, 1 baby, fulltime work = not a lot of time for gaming - also, only own 4 games and been sticking to RDR atm ;)

On topic :

Googled my own query about upscaling and found this...

"Upscaling requires copy protection which is only available through HDMI and some HDCP enabled DVI connections. The only legal analog connection that allows for upscaling is VGA. Some people use their 360's with a special cable to upscale via VGA.

There are a few SD DVD players that are out there that get around this legal requirement but would most likely not be worth the work and expense of aquiring one."

I have no objections to you taking it to a dick smith store but I wouldn't expect to get a refund from most managers without a receipt, ask the trademe seller if they still have it?
Your tv upscales all by itself, and probably does a better job than that player.
My advice either take it up with the seller or go through component the quality should be almost identical to HDMI.

Does the dvd have options for colourspace output? A friend with a really old junk TV has to choose RGB or it does what the OP is seeing. The component options on HDMI just dont work on his TV.

Well I followed the instructions for both TV and DVD - the settings are right for HDMI output/input. Every other setting works fine, s-video, composite etc. just the HDMI produces that horrible tinge even trying different resolutions same thing. I've ordered a different model DVD player which I'm going to try out, presumably if I get the same result it must be the TV otherwise if it works it must be the original DVD player. I've tried all the suggestions here, thanks very much for your help. I'll let you know what transpires

Update - bought an Akai unit and the HDMI works as it should so that proves that the DSE unit has a design fault as it's brand new. Unfortunately the Akai unit does not seem to be very good as there is a grainy line type thing going on on every setting, HDMI composite s-video etc. all have that effect. So it's back to the DSE and even though I can't use the HDMI side of it at least the component out seems to be pretty good although it's not true multizone - you can set the region in the secret menu but you have to change it to suit certain dvds rather than it being multizoned, still that's not a biggy. One thing I will say for the Akai unit is that it is true multizone out of the box, played my different region dvds no problem.

Can you not set the dse one to region 0 or 9 and have it play them all?

yeah that's what i thought but i set it to "0" and it won't play my region 1 dvds but if i set it to region 1 it plays fine!! Weird blooming thing
