Hi there, I have just bought a DSE DVD player(G3086) to go with my Transonic 50" plasma TV. Upon plugging the DVD in via HDMI it comes out all messed up, the picture is there but it's all saturated with red/pink and looks horrible. I've tried the settings on both the TV and the DVD player and they seem to match. If I use the normal RCA connections it works fine, it's just the HDMI. The TV is supposed to be able to handle 1080p HDMI but I can't get a decent picture. Also there's no sound from the HDMI output either. Cheers for any suggestions

Try using a different HDMI cable to determine whether or not it is the cable or the TV/DVD player input/outputs

Yeah I have another cable but it produced exactly the same result. I am thinking about trying an expensive cable but not sure if it's worth it but it's damn annoying because I bought this DVD precisely for the supposedly higher resolution of HDMI

I had this happen once with my PS3 to TV connection. Only in my case changing inputs away from hdmi1 to something else and then coming back fixed it. Weird.

To find out a bit more about your problem:

Do you have access to anything else that outputs hdmi to check with.
Do you have this problem on another hdmi input to the TV? (assuming the TV has more than 1 hdmi input?)
Do you have to turn on the hdmi output of the DVD player?
Can you force the DVD player to output something else, like 720P, and if so does that work?

I don't believe the issue will be the cable as you've tried a separate one.
I think it's most likely at the device end.
Beg / borrow another player and try that.
Then, if there's no success, try your player on another TV.

I'm picking you're working to a budget... but the Transonic / DSE combo doesn't fill me with a great amount of hope - even with an HDMI connection to upscale the picture.

Also there is a particular order you have to turn the devices on e.g. DVD player "on" first then the TV.

I found this with my setup - my receiver has to go on first, then the TV and then my PS3.

Yep tried all this and still the same result. I don't think a new cable will make a difference, I thought HDMI was a pretty safe, stable setup? Can't think of anything to try

I had the same issue with a DSE HDMI DVD player on my Panasonic TV.
Plugged in the player with a new HDMI cable and got the pink tinge to everything. Returned the player and got another but same problem.
Got a refund in the end.... tested the cable elsewhere and it worked fine, using that same cable with my PS3 now and no problems.

It was a shame, the player had some good specs - HDMI, Upscaling, DivX playback, 5.1 etc... could be as Cgrew said tho, maybe just picky equipment needing to be fired up in a certain order.

I think it's pretty bad, I mean it's supposed to be a standard interface so there shouldn't be any incompatibility issues. I'm stuck with basically a useless player even though the other outputs work because I wanted it for the HDMI(which is supposed to be the best picture quality). A cynical person might say the "industry" deliberately does this so people have to keep upgrading their equipment :( Bill Gates knows all about that

How are you 'stuck with it' - take it back it doesnt seem to work. They can easily test it in the shop for you.

Simple enough problem really - either its broken or your TV is. One way or another it can be fixed.

Ha ha yeah!! Bought off Trade Me as "new" so no taking it back. Both new appliances, I don't think either one is broken, obviously the HDMI from the DVD player doesn't work with the HDMI of the TV. Now it's a standard interface, so there can't be any issues there; I don't suppose the version of HDMI makes any difference? I can't imagine that it would. I'll probably buy a different model(when I can afford it) and see what happens.

HDMI connection would be clearer than the usual RCA/Svideo connection..... Id still try taking it back to DSE, its obviously one of their players, just say it was a gift and the reciept isnt around anymore, they may help you out.

...I wouldn't be encouraging that approach.
There's clearly people posting from Dick Smith on here - probably not a good idea to advise a poster to go back and lie. Sure Dick Smith 'may' help the OP out, but telling the truth would be the best approach in my books.
I'd go back to the seller on Trademe and see if they can offer a remedy - however, I wouldn't be holding my breath.
