Most quality brands of NAS offer itunes library support, so it will stream straight off your nas without your pc being on. I will be interested once the guys over at XBMC get there hands on one and see what they can do with it. As stated there is a microusb port under the hdmi port, once hacked then this could be used for storage, and live xbmc

. Also once its not running the horrible aTV software you might be surprised what it can do, 1080p maybe possible, the xbmc team did wonders with the first aTV.. Will be following closely.

A unit that size with a 6w power draw running xbmc for $169 will be hard to pass up!

Awesome, looks like I have found a new solution to stream my movie/tv show iTunes library to my tv rather than running an HDMI cable round most my room, assuming that this will stream any content that I have imported into my library. The price is rather nice as well

gehenna: It's great, but it'll be costly in the long run. Once you add a reliable VPN subscription cost, bandwidth cap costs, and international iTunes voucher top-ups, it'll just end up being easier to fall back on torrents again and watching your media via network connected HTPC. Which sucks.

You don't need a VPN for a US iTunes account, I have one and use it often, and it works fine.

However there is the small overhead to buy the top up vouchers, and for the next few months I have double data through Telecom (80GB) which could go a long way towards this kind of content/data.

But yeay, I know what you mean, sometimes it's just easier to get content that isn't available locally via a torrent. It's stupid, but that's another argument, and I don;t want to hijack the thread!

Only 720p, MP4s only up to 640x480, seems a bit feeble.

Yeah I know, I'm talking VPN for geolocked streaming services like Hulu, etc...or whoever decides to jump onboard as a provider.

Sucks they don't have an internal HD. I might get one when I find out from someone else if you can connect external HD's to it. Otherwise not really worth it

Doesn't worry me, something new and better is always around the corner and at $169 it will be a nice gadget to play with. I guess my I will end up giving it to my parents so they can easily view their photos on the TV.

It's good value compared to an Airport Express.
I use an AirportExpress for playing music at getherings, works really well, but this is cheaper and will play movies too.

On the other hand... Airport Express can be used to connect a network printer (like I do, with a pair of speakers connected to stream audio to the study), while the Apple TV can't.
Horses for courses I suppose.

For NZ the biggest restraint is going to be our low data caps.

I'm on a 102GB / month quota with Orcon. That costs me about $120 / month.

It's worth it. We do whatever we want and don't worry about data.....and none of us download all day and all night.

I to plonked down the cash to have a play with, I liked the onscreen display and the ease of use.

More importantly ease of use for the rest of the family. Maybe a solution to our wanting to watch content on a single device.

We are all looking for a device that does it all, I think I maybe still looking.

This adds to my collection, I use a WDTV to stream content from my Windows Home Server to the Tv.

iPhone and iPad stream content from the home server.

I tried Freeveiw, no content, Tivo locked down hardly any content (getting better) have MySky HD but hardly any choice of movies and tv shows I won't to watch.

This will leave the Apple TV which I can buy movies and show (hopefully there will be content to choose from) plus stream to the iPhones and iPads in the house.

Roll on the day it arrives.

That's good, I wish I could have that on Telecom. I used to be with Orcon and for me they were crap. Poor service, poor speed.
