Is anyone going to be getting one? I'm pre-ordering mine now.

EDIT:

NZ$5.99 for HD movies
NZ$4.99 for SD

Now, if only the likes of Fatso and a few ISP's got onboard... We can only dream.

I note the prices they quote are the 'start from' prices so that will be the 10 year old movies that have been on public TV at no charge regulalrly (spot the pessimist!)  I would be interested to know what new releases will actually be worth.

Given the cost of data I would also hate to think how much it would cost to download a handful of HD movies every other weekend..any clues?

I suspect the $169 cost would quickly go quite a bit higher during actual use?

I have an Apple TV and HD movies are about the 4GB vicinity, so as you can imagine we don't download too many movies each month!

For NZ the biggest restraint is going to be our low data caps.

I would prefer the old Apple TV tbh, I like the standalone storage, having to fire up another computer just to stream off is a pain and the ability to jailbreak the old Apple TV is awesome,

Fully agree that our low data caps will be the biggest constraint. We need a local iTunes cache server and free traffic too it!

Maxing out at 720P doesn't really bother me though, I think that's fine. Although at this stage I'm looking at going something with a 2.5" HDD space to replace one of my HTPCs or PS3s

This probably won't do very well in NZ, with our crappy low data caps/expensive data. Although I imagine people on slingshot's unlimited plan might want to give it a go :P

I think if I can stream from my iTunes library, it'd be ideal for my usage.

I don't often get new movies out, but have most of my DVD library in my iTunes library, so it'd be nice to be able to have those available all in one depository, as it were.

I like the idea of being able to stream all my music to the surround system too.

There are iPod/iPhone docks that cost a lot more that do a lot less, so I don;t think it's bad value at all.

Agreed - but if it offered external storage it'd be a choice unit...

... and if it supported REAL HD, and not just 720p :-(

... and if you could hack it to run MKVs :-( without converting. Hopefully someone finds a way to jailbreak it, although with no real iOS it's going to be tricky

If ATV flash works on this it will be a perfect front end for the likes of MythTV :D

Theres a micro-USB port at the back. It may be possible to use with an External HDD via hack.

Personally, I'm happy with it without storage. I'm just going to stream all the movies that I've purchased on iTunes from my other Mac via AirPlay.

There was mention on Gizmodo (I think) that it can stream from a local iTunes library as well as from the 'net.

I will get one, plus I have a US iTunes account so it should be a real alternative to Sky and there crappy lineup - at least with Apple TV the choice of content is fully with the user.

As for 720p, I read something (Gizmodo again?) that Apple stated it was the best compromise between quslity and bandwidth, and honestly, unless you sit within the THX recommended distance of a 1080p screen, it's not going to matter that much.

The available content and pricing are more important than the difference between 720p and 1080 (i or p).

Would be excellent if:

-I could connect to a NAS and stream directly without iTunes
-It could play a wider variety of formats: divX for one

I think the best device for my needs is still a mac mini in the second bedroom hooked up to a NAS with all the movies and music on it

You can do that with the current model and some of the unoffical firmware (Not sure on the streaming from NAS part though, will have to check that out...).

It's great, but it'll be costly in the long run. Once you add a reliable VPN subscription cost, bandwidth cap costs, and international iTunes voucher top-ups, it'll just end up being easier to fall back on torrents again and watching your media via network connected HTPC. Which sucks.

From someone who was planning on getting a airport express to stream music to my stereo, this is now my choice... plus it will do video as well.

Come November it will also stream iphone/ipad video.

On the NAS, you could set up an itunes server (most have this option I think), this would solve the NAS connection issue as the atv works over ethernet/wifi.

The internet option on the ui looked interesting. I am hoping there will be facility to add other video sites if you want/need.

I would welcome TVNZ launching an iOS/h.264 alternative site.

I also have a US itunes account so that should be useful. Go TC doubing my BW... :)

Yay!
