Consumer don't rank samsung well for reliability. My personal experice with samsung LCDs hasn't been good, and I ended up getting a refund. Sony and panasonic are rated top for LCDs.

I think all the manufacturers (Panny, Sony and Samsung) have all had their moment of glory from Consumer. They have all brought out really good reliable LCD TV's but also some not-so-reliable models too. Samsung in particular..

People would argue Panasonic are really reliable, others Sony (me ;P) and Samsung as well. They're all good but lately going by recent votes by Consumer it has been Sony.

I have found sony stuff really reliable. Panasonic too aren't bad, but they don't have the deign style of sony. They go through good and bad patches, and I think their current models look a little cheap, compared to the previous model, and this is backed up by the fact that they have removed DLNA from their cheaper models.

interestingly the top consumer brand for TV in Japan at the moment is Toshiba - but you don't hear much about them in NZ. Not sure if they are even available any more.

OK, here's some useful information for you.

It sounds like you're going to physically drive to Akl (from somewhere else) with the plans of buying a TV and sticking it in your car/wagon/van and taking it home.

Be aware that you should NEVER transport a plasma TV lying down. I bought a big Plasma from Harvey Normans a couple of weeks ago and while I knew I _should_ carry it upright, it was never going to fit in my wagon upright so I decided to risk it and lie it down. When the guys saw my car and figured I was going to transport it lying down, they refused to let me take delivery of the TV, and said that if I insisted, they would void the warranty on the set.

It was pleasantly resolved with them offering to deliver it for free.

It may be different for LCD, but for Plasma - transport upright only.

FWIW, I have had 2 large LCD and recently 2 big plasmas (Samsung and Panasonics)... The LCDs were nice, but Plasmas are better in dark rooms (yes, even better than new LCDs). I think the plasmas are also slightly better for sports but that side of things is pretty close now.

I have a Samsung LCD and a Panny LCD - both full HD and I am happy with both of them (tho' I marginally prefer the panny). I no longer buy Sony with a 10 foot pole, I don't like the general arrogance of the company towards its customers and the quality of the products isn't what it was a couple of years ago.

The advice I would add to what has already been expressed is to get a TV with plenty of inputs. Even the best TV is no good if you can't connect your gear to it. Many of the newer ones skimp connectors, esp at the cheap end of the model ranges. As well as 3 or 4 HDMI, if you have non-HDMI legacy kit (VHS, older DVD, Nintendo Wii, non-MySky box, video camera etc) you need other connectors. Some cheaper models only have one component input and one AV input. I have just finished trying to set up the new TV of an older family member for them, and they are fairly irritated that they have to get new kit - the satelite box got the only component socket, the VCR got the only AV one, and they can't connect their (servicable) DVD player or video sender without a purchasing a switchbox and a maze of cables.

Look for at least two component inputs AND at least two AV inputs (preferrably three) as well as HDMI inputs when buying.

It really is up to the sales person to ask about the items that are being plugged into the TV...
I wonder how many people have had Scart cables coming out of their Sky box and into their old Philips TV's... only to find out it won't plug into their new Samsung tellie!
Panasonic really do seem to be the safest bet when it comes to connections.

sales man did ask what i was going to plug into the tv. and to be honest he wasn't pushing the most expensive tv as well. he did offer a few different models, but as i wa
nted full HD and the biggest i could get for the amount i had the panasonic was the winner.
after having a day using it now i am happy, lapytop plugs in through hdmi cable and plays movies with no hasle
the only thing it does not have that i would of liked is a usb port, but o well

I wouldn't worry too much about USB ports.
BluRay players, home theatre, games consoles etc often come with USB ports (some offer more functionality than others)... meaning it should be easy to play movies etc of USB sticks. :-)
