I am in auckland and tomorrow am plainning on buy a TV. Not to fussed about LCD vs Plasma. As long as it is Full HD.
Anyone know of any really good deals, or places to go, looking at 42 to 50 inch.

Seriously - first up decide on the size.
If you don't, you'll only end up being bombarded with model after model after model.
Start by cutting out a piece of card to the size of a 42", 46" and 50" - then decide how it looks in your room. If you can't decide between two... go bigger.
That'll help cut down the choices, making an easier, quicker decision.

Re: deals, don't worry as there will always be offers to be had.
Just make sure you find the right TV for you, then find the best price... something that is much easier to do in person than over the phone (sales people seldom give their best price over the phone for numerous reasons).

I suggest plasma, more natural. G0 for full HD naturally, always go for quality, i.e Panny for plasma Sony for LCD

Warehouse has a 50" Plasma for $999 at the mo.
Sounds great till you see it's HD ready only, not full HD, and doesn't have freeview built in.

Shop around is good advice. If you are able to make a day of moving from one shop to another you'll soon see a bargain. Same if you are buying a house etc too, you have to know what the market is doing before you know something is a standout.

Make sure it has Freeview HD built in.

What sort of setup do you use? eg. Sky, Freeview?
If you use freeview HD (terrestrial) its best to get a tv with built in freeview HD.

LED/LCD are normally the best way to go, plasma normally have shorter lifes and darker screens. Toshiba TV's are not the way to go, they normally pack it in 2 weeks after warranty expired like mine.....

Sony, Panasonic, Samsung are the way to go.

But Dick Smith have a full HD 42" for $999 (http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/4ca39be5017de4d02742c0a87f3b0759/Product/View/GE6593)
but it is their brand and i wouldn't necessarily expect it to last for a life time. But it has freeview built in so thats a pro.

heh, cobblers. A far more natural image than LCD. If u have MySky and Tivo as I do, he HD is magic. Panasonic Viera 50 and 42 plasmas both Full HD

I'm saying that from experience with Tv's. I have looked at many side by side and you can see a difference, i agree about the natural image, but really they do on average die before LCD's. My dad is a Tv repairman and he has had far more Plasmas in for repair than LCD's or LED's

It's far closer than anyone cares to admit on the plasma/lcd debate.

I myself prefer plasma having owned both types before.
I think plasma wins based on picture quality, ie what looks best, which should be pretty high on the list for anyone wanting to buy a TV I would have thought.

LCD seems to win on power consumption and brigthness in a daylight room where glare may be an issue.
Most other LCD benefits seem to be more marketing hype to me, ie weight etc, because who really cares about that, it's either going to sit on a cabinet or be wall mounted into studs, not gib board.

So yeah, really depends on your use and viewing habbits etc, ie personal choice.

If you are looking for the best price, I can recommend using pricespy.co.nz.

I tracked prices of various plasma TVs for a while, and finally jumped when I got an email alert advising me of a whopping $800 off on my "dream" model. In consequence, although my budget really only extended to a 42" or maybe, just, a 46", or maybe a last-year's 50" if I could find a new one in stock anywhere, I ended up with a current model 50"!

It's a shame really because if you could get your hands on a Sony Bravia 08/09 model they were the best for picture quality I've seen to date.

I own a Sony Bravia KDL-46W4500 and in my opinion I still find this one of the best Full-HD 1080P LCD TV's out there. Sony's quality doesn't seem as good as the 08 models now but they are still up there as the best LCD's.

It really doesn't matter what you go for, the Plasma TV's and LCD's both look great - it all comes down to personal preference I think and what you will be watching on your new TV.

Consumer don't rank samsung well for reliability. My personal experice with samsung LCDs hasn't been good, and I ended up getting a refund. Sony and panasonic are rated top for LCDs.
