Thanks farcus, when you put it like that it actually sounds a lot better than the option of buying videotapes. So you'd say it's a good thing for me to get for Mum? Does the job, records well without hassles, etc?

yeah. I did update the firmware when I bought mine just over a year ago.
I would imagine new ones now come with the latest firmware but if not there is a link here where you can download and put onto the unit.

I find it curious that your mum can't seem to buy VHS tapes anymore.

I have been "out and about" in the sales since I read your post, and have been noticing that most places still have them. All the supermarkets I have been in (Countdown, Woolworths, Pak n Save), as well as the Warehouse and Noel Leemings (Porirua) still have them on the shelves.

Not as cheap as they used to be, but still around.

I still have to use the VCR occasionally, as my Mums DVD player won't cope with the disks recorded on my DVD recorder, and I still tape stuff for her from time to time.

Don't overestimate Wanganui or her motivation to actually find the tapes ;)

Thanks for the tips though :)

freeviewshop has a deal on a new ultraplus hdmi pvr unit. Ultraplus 700hdmi pvr.

It's $140 and would need a spare external hdd or USB drive. Doesn't upscale, it's SD only but still might be worth a look. I personally would go that over the other no name units on offer.

It's probably exactly the same as the one I got on trademe, it has very similar or identical features. If I knew about it i'd have bought it over the trademe one though, just because I prefer stores to auctions.

My Mum has the new receiver now, in another city from me. She says the old one seemed to pick up Optus 1, the new one is using Optus 2. She can only get tv 1, 2, and trackside.

Any tips? I could probably figure it out if I was there, but i'm not.

Sorted it. She selected Optus D1 and did a channel scan.

timmmay: She can only get tv 1, 2, and trackside.

Sounds like the SKY TV transponder on Optus D1.  They rebroadcast TV1,TV2 FTA but I didn't think they had trackside free to air though, unless she could just hear it?  Anyway, glad it's sorted.
