johnr: If anyone thinks these cables will make a difference from a $20 cable is smoking something they should not be,

The trademe ad is misleading

No real difference really in selling religion or believing in Taniwha's, if you think its real, to you, its real.

Just wish I could make a buck off it.

Well you have the crappy old power wires to your house, then god knows what in the wall...

I have also seen a wooden volume knob being sold for $400US for the sound improvements it brings.

If you had good quality power, and had your equipment on a separate/dedicated line from your fuse, it "may" be possible for these little tweaks to make a difference, how much of a difference is anyones guess.

There is one audioenzer whom is an advocate of lifting the cables off the floor on little stands as he believes he can hear the difference in sound, given the level of equipment the guy has, I'm not going to argue with him, as he seems extremely switched on, but its all horses for courses.

Audiofiliacs love their tweaks, be it used snake oil or something that genuinely improves the sound, its all been tried before and varying levels of expense incurred in search of audio nirvana

Me, I just take the covers off my speakers if im really in the mood for some foot tapping time, but thats about as much of a tweak as I'll do

Taking your cabling off the ground actually has sound theory (no pun intended) I can't for the life of me see this cable being able to provide that at all. Besides lifting your cables off the ground doesn't cost!

Of course the marketing will say that the cable stands are created by a sub-saharan african tribe that specialises in sub-audible animal tracking.

Unfortunately like everything else it will still have Made in China on the back.

I import cables from China, I bet I could get these made to the EXACT claimed spec and sell them for $100 and still make a huge profit!

That is a bargain for a knob.
I replaced all my metal and plastic knobs with wood as the grain enhances the music, adding more depth and colour to the overall sound.

We should all be doing these

Just to give a little perspective behind this, the seller, Jason Parmenter, is a high end audio manufacturer and importer from Muriwai Beach.

He manufactures a range of hi-fi equipment including tube gear but is perhaps most well known for his Fat Boy horn speakers which retail for around the 40K mark.

the problem with what he is selling here is that as he himself stated overall effect is only as good as the weakest link. Can a power cable make a difference? possibly, when all other factors are working to their optimum. there may be a minute amount of voltage drop, however you'd have to assume that the components are running at a full 230-240V and the power supply is not simply feeding a transformer.

You may also want to sell your current house and move closer to a sub-station or transformer.

I'm not sure about the construction of this particular cable but one of the main features put forward for these aftermarket cables is the idea of braided construction where the wires are twisted together a bit like they make a climbing robe.

This is pro-ported to filter noise on the mains and repel RF interference (so in this sense they work regardless of the incoming line quality). The argument against this is that you shouldn't be able to produce this effect on a non-differential signal system.

Interestingly, Russ Andrews, a UK cable seller & distributor, was investigated by the UK Advertising Standards Authority a few years ago and deemed to have made unsubstantiated claims about cables constructed in this way reducing mains interference and told not to repeat the claims.
