chiefie: i know Samsung has one... not sure it is still available or not but they're the only one to do HDMI output.

Sony has a DVD/HDD recorder, their RDR-HX1010 model which has all the thing you want. but not too sure about upscaling though.

I purchased a Samsung HD841 (US model) when I was over there. Then flashed the firmware with modified firmware from another Samsung player (can't remember) so that the player could output 720p and 1080i over component and play Divx.

But the norm is usually not to be able to upscale over component

Panasonic DMREH65 and the Sony 400Gb upconvert to 720p/1080i over HDMI
Same with the Pansonic, Phillips and Pioneer HDMI players...

The advantage of HDMI over component with regular DVD is that with component it coverts from digital to analogue then back to digital again; with hdmi it just stay digital

manaia: SKY are hoping to enable component output on some models of non-PVR decoder before the end of the year. The oldest models, (with TP2 and TP3 processors) will never be able to do it, but the newer ST 5512, 5516 and 5517-based models can with a software update. What's the model number and manufacturer of your second decoder? (from the sticker underneath)

Any idea if the Motorola decoders (such as my DTH335-4) will accept the 'component output' update? Thanks.

I should point out that all digital displays finally convert to analog, even plasma and LCD panels, the final drive is analog in some form or other. A HDMI interconnect simply removes the D-A output of the STB or DVD player, and removes the A-D on the input of the display, this is all worth having. Once in the display the deinterlacer and over all processing is done digitally, then at the final panel driver is converted back to analog by some means or other.

The Motorola 320, 325 and 335 decoders have component ability which will (if all goes well) be enabled by the next software download. The Motorola 310 doesn't have component output ability to be enabled.

This will be good to have, mums tv only has composite and component inputs, and a chroma filter that makes zippers appear _everywhere_.

Dates and release notes are still being finalised ... the major changes (off the top of my head) are:
- some teletext improvements
- some fixing in the area of random changing to channels 0, 25, 44, 58 etc
- component output enabled for non TP2 or TP3 decoders
- improvement to the BER display on Motorola decoders
I will post a better list when I get the document.

Any improvements in the speed of the program guide? thats the most annoying thing I have whenever I have to use the skybox.

Sorry - as far as I know EPG speed is governed by the decoder processor speed so won't be changed.

Out of the eight SKY non-PVR decoders five have the hardware capability to output component signal through the SCART. The piece that has been missing is the bit of software in the EPG to switch to it. SKY now have EPG code which identifies the decoder type and allows component output on decoders which support it. There is no hardware change needed on the decoder. You would need a new SCART cable.

The five decoders which (software QC allowing) will support component output are the Motorola 320, 325 and 335 and the Pace DSR2000 and DS230. Sorry - the Motorola 310 cannot.

Thanks for the heads up on this manaia, look forward to its final deployment.

On another note, the wee silver Pace230, does it support S-Video out of its SCART's or not, the Pace site indicates not, but I would be interested to know.
