Can't be as bad as the original bluray release. Fellowship just looks awful on it.

There is a website that has done a really awesome side by side. Will have a hunt for it.

Blue tinge is only on The Fellowship movie and doesn't worry me at all. Each to their own though

I have this set and the blue (sometimes green) tinting of the picture, as has been described is a myth to me. I have a very high quality display and the results are amazing from this new set.

The whites are indeed still white, the greens are slightly greener and the blues slightly bluer, but that's about it. The changes look to be for the better on my display, which is a Sony 55EX720.

I was extremely worried about the so-called tinting effect before I bought this set, and paid double as much attention looking for it when I got it. The negative effects on a decent display are so minimal I was shocked this even became a discussion. The positive effects that result from the colour balance alterations are immensely beneficial, in my opinion.

As for them putting these movies on 2 discs? This was to utilise as high a bit-rate as possible for both the visual and audio data. Both of these would've needed significant compression had it not been done this way and people would not have noticed any considerable differences in picture quality when they compared these blu rays to the dvd releases.

The "tinge" on Fellowship is how PJ wanted the film released originally according to all the info Ive read on this "issue".

Hi, my set is from New Zealand (Region B) and I believe our sets are not any better or worse produced than those from other regions.

It's possible that the LED-LCD Televisions may be better than standard LCD televisions at reproducing the intended picture, but I'm not convinced that's the reason for some having an issue with the picture.

I've got another standard LCD TV in another room and an old 29" CRT television in another as well, so I might give those a try with the LOTR discs and post back later with the results of that.

In any case, I think it's worth noting that many of the people complaining about it on both blu ray review sites and You Tube comparison clips haven't even bought the sets as yet. There are more and more people starting to say "Hey, I held off buying this and the issue wasn't an issue at all for me", and things like that.

I do notice that the colour timing and balance has been altered, that's for sure, but I honestly don't believe that anything has been sacrificed really. On the snowy climb up the first mountain where the ring momentarily comes into the grasp of Boromir, I couldn't fault the colours at all. There had obviously been a subtle tweak of colours, but the whites were still as sharp a white colour when compared to the rest of the picture as they had been on previous releases. It to me overall appeared a much better picture than ever before though of course.

Will report back when I've checked out the other two televisions.

Thanks for that. I was just wondering whether the colour tinting would be more apparent on darker screens, and if brighter LED screens lessened the alleged affect on the snow scenes, etc, because the whites could possibly be whiter on these screens? And also, if discs differed from region to region.

Anyways, hopefully the price of the boxed set will come down somewhat at some stage. :-)

I ran disc 2 of fellowship last night and can see what is meant by the blue/green tinge, especially when they are climbing up the mountain and Frodo slips over, the snow looks more like a flavoured slushy than snow. This is the only time colouring was an issue for me.

Display is PTAX-200 projector on a mid-range screen.Not colour calibrated professionally but tweaked using calibration discs for colour/contrast/brightness.

I got my LOTR:EE Blu-ray set from Amazon too - much cheaper than here (about $80 incl. shipping, versus $120 here at JB. It's a region-free release, and i haven't heard or read that the colour timing is different in certain releases / regions.

On my P42V20, calibrated carefully (but not professionally), the picture is crisp and sharp, and the colour timing of FOTR didn't worry me at all. Overall the film is presented slightly darker than I remember it, but it's not detrimental. The so-called still shot comparisons bear no resemblence to (my) real world experience. Oh, and to the poster above, when you see the quality of the transfer, you won't mind getting up to change discs half way through the film. Stunning quality comes at the cost of needing more space than a single 50GB Blu-ray disc can hold.

I suppose they could release a 'lazy-ass-lesser-picture' version on a single disc in future.

I can't understand people with big full HD TV's and then want to compromise on Picture and Audio quality because they are too lazy to get up and swap a disc.
