No matter how cheap they get, I won't be allowed one because I get the "It will dominate the room because its too big" argument.

scott: I am really sorry to hear that. What I can categorically tell you with a LOT of experience with Large TV's in my living rooms, is that 1-2 weeks after it's been installed, you won't notice it (My wife was concerned as well) unless you get visitors around.

I got around the last one, by putting a projector in and a 106" motorized screen. Suits everyone since it looks awesome, and takes up NO floor space (I have my other stuff in a rack in the corner)

This is where I am grateful I dont have that problem ;) I will probably pick something that size up once the silly rugby thing is over for my bedroom, but perhaps someone will have a 60something for cheap? At those sizes 1080 isnt really enough eh ;)

I know I know! But honestly, I have a better chance of being allowed a .50cal machine gun than a 55 inch TV :( No matter how much I use silly things like math, logic and geometry it always come down to 'No! It will dominate the room!"

...but, If I hold my SGS really close, and close one eye...it kind of looks like a bigscreen TV

I Love my wife, I didn't need to employ these tactics at all :)

As an aside, the 55" Sony is cheap right now ($1599 at most retailers as they'll all be following Noel Leeming's lead). The issue is...
It's a lot of TV for not much money, and there in lies the quality issue.
The panel is around 2.5 - 3 year old, 8=bit, non-IPS model. Meaning it will suffer from poor off-axis viewing. However, it WILL be mint in a brightly lit room. At the same time, the matte finish screen will rob you of colour.
They have, to my knowledge, been continued from the 2010 range of TV's, but have recently been announced as being discontinued. It's a lot of TV for very little money, but it won't handle low quality feeds particularly well (standard def. Sky, satellite Freeview, DVD's, Nintendo Wii etc). But for BluRay / PS3 / MySky / Freeview HD - you should be happy enough.
It'll get smoked by a 55" NeoPlasma from the likes of Panasonic, but you'll pay at least another $700 extra for one of those.

When you say 8bit colour per channel, is it like many computer monitors that are really 6bit per channel but use a dithering method to display 8bit?

Noel Leemings online store is interesting as it says 20% off all Sony/Panasonic/samsung/lg TVs not already on special. Yet many of the Sony LED ones haven't been discounted, yet they don't appear to be on special either.

So anything on their list will be 20% off, I've just had a look through and everything seems to be pretty much spot on.

The price shown on the sony website is often the price it was when it was first released, but over time the price drops. I think there has been a recent price drop on Sony LED TVs. Also noticed the same thing with canon digital cameras where their normal price (not an advertised special) has dropped.

For example the 40 inch led sony KDL40EX520 on the NL website is $1299, and also $1299 on the bond and bond website (both operated by the same company), yet neither say that is a 'special price' or what they have been reduced from anything.

JB Hifi has their price of $1284, undercutting it. Price spy shows that most retailers are selling it for around the $1200 -$1300 range, so I think that is around the current normal price. However last weekend, the bond and bond website had the same TV advertised on special for $1099 reduced from the normal price which I think said $1299 was the regular price. So it doesn't appear NL has taken 20% off it for some reason.
Even if it was 20% off sonys RRP of $1599, that should make it $1279.

Picked up one of these from Noel Leeming today, price was too good to let go. It's being delivered on Monday so I'm picking there'll be a good movie playing on Blu-ray at my place that night :)
