Lol a dark can as reference but I guess by definition you are referencing to a specific can rather than the theoretical flat

I don't mean as a flat reference, though I find it relatively neutral, I mean as a reference headphone to compare others with. I compared it with the HD650 not that long ago, I can hear a difference but not as much as I expected.

I think some people let their expectations and what they spent influence their ears.

LCD-2 Vs HD650 for bass? The LCD-2 destroy the 650 there, no comparison. Better extension, better weight, infinitely better texture. For me the LCD-2 aren't a very good reference headphone apart from the bass, where they are pretty much THE reference (I prefer the HE-6 bass myself, it's tighter and faster and has better slam, which matters for the genres I care most about, without giving up much in terms of weight/texture).

I'd have to check my notes, but from memory the bass of the LCD2 was stronger and lower. I found the two headphones had a different signature but both were detailed and enjoyable.

Yep, they're both very good, while I'd easily give the LCD -2 a nod for bass over the 650, that isn't really a knock on the 650 which are very good in their own right.

Just as well I checked my email last night before bed, only just saw that Computer Lounge had 15% off Sennheiser headphones yesterday only. Just barely managed to squeeze in at 11:59pm and snag some HD800.

Incidentally, when I went in today I notice they are really expanding their audio offerings - now they have Audeze and high-end AKG joining their already good stable of headphone brands (Sennheiser, Grado, Beyerdynamic, Ultrasone). Can't be many other places to audition the LCD-2 in NZ, and they tell me the LCD-X and LCD-3 are coming sometime soon too!

Avalon Audio currently has the KEF M500 on special for $300 which is a steal.

The M500 are sonically excellent and easy to drive, so would be a good choice if you want to listen to music on an iPhone etc. without using an amp.
