Unless I am misreading your reply I have to disagree. I currently can cast  BBC from my laptop using Chrome browser with Surfshark VPN (on the laptop not router). The only extra thing I have to do is choose Cast screen and go full screen and not Cast tab. I can't do this from my smartphone because CC doesn't give me the option to choose Cast screen so it's more faffing to use mirroring but it works.

I'll just have to suck and see when I get the CC with Google TV.

If you can cast now then casting will work. What won't work is if the channel you are getting the stream from checks your ip address is in their country, in which case the CCwGTV stream needs to go through the VPN interface. In your cast you where not casting from BBC but from the desktop on your laptop which is different.

As above - there is a difference between casting from an app and casting from a browser tab/window.

The app passes a token to the chromecast and it then use that to get the stream. The app can control playback but you can turn off your phone and the stream will continue.

The casting from a browser tab/window is basically a screen mirror.

In any case, whatever you were doing before it will still work.

Got my Googletv, bit of a faff installing it and missed opportunity to get it linked to my android phone. But eventually everything seemed OK and used it successfully even finding, by accident, that my Panasonic tv remote can operate most of the functions. Then while exploring the various settings etc. it froze. So I unplugged it and went to bed.

Next day I plugged it in and back to normal except the remote seems to have failed. Put in new batteries...still nada.

I can use the tv remote but I'm inclined to return the unit and get a replacement.

You may have to re-pair the remote. Have had this happen to ours (after some glitch). Use your TV remote to navigate to Settings and find Remotes. Not near ours at the moment to give you more detailed info. You can also add other accounts and certainly use your phone as a remote, etc.

Google's "Google TV" app on Android has a remote. That has not happened to me. Just failing batteries one time after 18 months. Not bad.

The only issue I have had with mine is it regularly coming up with a message that it has lost the wifi connection, then it usually comes back a short period later. Despite being close to the wifi.

Thanks Hammered. That fixed it. Haven't tried the smartphone bit yet.

As mentioned above. Install the "Google TV" app on your phone, and you should be able to click "TV Remote" in the bottom right corner, and you're off.

Why can't I load the Al Jazeera app?

A mate has got it on his CCGTV but I can't find it with Search and Play Store says it's not available for my device.

I agree - It's not available for Android TV - I looked (or maybe its blocked for this part of the world).

Just did a query on the Amazon Fire TV and its available for that - This is one of the reasons I have relegated the CCwGTV to the bedroom TV - The app coverage seems very patchy at times - The AFTV ecosystem is vastly better for some reason.

For what its worth - you could try sideloading the version from apkmirror.

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/al-jazeera-network/al-jazeera-english-android-tv/al-jazeera-english-android-tv-1-2-4-release/

I think you need the one with 'nodpi' against it.

Talk to your mate then? How did your mate get the app?

Are there some magic words you need to use to query the Google Play store?

Sideloading is the slightly mucky process of obtaining an app for your android device that is not otherwise made available to you via the app store.

This is usually when content is geo blocked to an area. e.g. you wont be able to download and install (or even find) the BBC iplayer app via the google play store here in NZ.

Some helpful people in the google community manage to load the apps for their areas into third party sites so that other users in different parts of the world may download them. The process of getting that app file onto your CCwGTV and then installing is called sideloading.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2021/02/07/how-to-sideload-any-apk-on-the-chromecast-with-android-tv/

Of course installing a sideloaded app for BBC iplayer wont mean it will just work - In this case they wont let the content stream to NZ - you would also need a VPN for that.

But I would suspect that Al Jazeera have just not made the app available here and installing it would probably be enough to get it going.

If you go to the https://webapps.aljazeera.net/aje/connect/ page and scroll to the bottom, it has Chromecast under the 'Coming Soon' list - So who knows....

Odd. You might need to reset one of many cache settings. Compare the hardware IDs if you can.

Thanks robjg63 I'll try that.

That gives a 404.
