chevrolux: Apple TV2 jail broken with XBMC.

No 1080p output with the ATV2 though, and no sign of a jailbreak for the ATV3.

Personally I have had it with media players and their PITA closed firmware that never quite does what you want. I would (and indeed just did) stretch the budget and get an HTPC: you can get a case, i3, motherboard and RAM for about $375 now that will play anything with no firmware and codec worries and a wide choice of user interfaces, operating systems, and accessories. Add an 802.11n USB for $25. OK, it won't be as compact, but does it really matter?

I'm dubious you can build a decent htpc this cheap.

It only cost me $99 (delivered) for the case because I had parts left over from another upgrade, but the equivalent parts with current prices from Pricespy are:

Foxconn DH045 250W (Black) $90.82. This is a nice slim MicroATX case, seems to be a clone of the Antec Minuet 300, but with a nicer front panel, and built-in PSU.

   Intel Core i3 2100 3.1GHz Socket 1155 Box $156.40
   Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 PC10600/1333MHz CL9 1GB 2× $12.33
    Asus P8H61-M EVO B3 $103.83

Motherboard chosen at random, I don't know if it is particularly good for an HTPC but it's roughly the equivalent of the EVGA H55V that I used.

You can run XBMCbuntu from a $10 thumb drive, or add a hard disk if you want local storage.

With the Intel stock cooler and just the built-in case fans this is very quiet. I haven't measured it but it's quieter than the media player it replaced, and much quieter than an Xbox 360.

Oh and I spent $10 more for this remote control, which works OK with the Logitech Harmony, although you can just use an iPhone or Android remote control app.

Thumbgen is an automated scraper for wdtv. however i have so many movies / tv series on my network i find the media library is too slow, and prefer to just browse network shares.

Cheers for proving me wrong.  That looks like a decent little setup, and cheap too.  Might just be my next project.

Great sounding setup! Unfortunately, I'm waaaay too lazy, and waaay too cheap.

I've decided to go for the WDTV Live Streaming Media Player. And it seems Plex has been reported as working on the WDTV Live via the Plex DLNA beta that's currently being worked on.

The only reason I'm considering it is the PS3 is a bit annoying at times, it won't play everything. If I get rid of my PS3 I'd need to get some kind of a disk player. I could put a blu ray player in my PC for about $130 and mount that, but it seems more trouble, and it's not very girlfriend friendly, she still uses physical DVDs.

Downgrade PC or upgrade girlfriend...hmmm ;)

I think a $40 DVD player from the warehouse is easier than getting a new girlfriend.

There's another review of the XTreamer on amazon... it pretty well trashes it.

probably right. In an ideal world your girlfriend would upgrade your pc :)

DVD players are so cheap as to be free these days. It'd be nice if the media streamers had the option of a DVD or blu ray drive, but a standalone blu ray players's only $180 an HN anyway.

Can't remember the last time I used my bluray. Quality streaming services will get here eventually. Have been meaning to sign up to a stable vpn and try out netflix, but that's a whole other topic.

A friend of mine is working on a TVNZ on demand channel for Plex. He showed it me in action the other day. Works quite well. Even skips the ads.

Oh, is he on lighthouse?  I think I remember making the topic on there, and had communication with someone from outside NZ who said he was looking at it.

Though TBH, I don't have a lot of success with channels in plex.  Not sure why - another topic though.
