So how did you configure your Roku3 for an alternate DNS?

Via the modem/router. You have to alter the DNS on the modem/router for Roku to work as Roku's network settings do not let you set a static IP or alternate DNS.

Ah ok. So won't that stuff up all the other users in the house that don't need the alternate DNS but are sharing the same router?

Yes it would. Not much I can do about that but then there aren't website's that anyone in the household visits that will screw anything for them. I am currently an VDSL2 customer so have to use the modem supplied by my ISP. Once I switch to UFB in couple of months time hopefully, I will bring back my Asus RT-N16 router loaded with Tomato and can fine tune it to allow only certain devices to use certain DNS/VPN connection etc.

Do whatever you want to do man.

unblock-us seems to handle it all pretty well.

I have had my router configured like this for some time now and I have never had any problems accessing anything.

Yeah roku has 0 configurable networking options - Connect your Wifi and it goes type thing.

I use policy based routing on my router to route all traffic from the roku (and apple tv and wd tv player) out via VPN, along with DHCP reservations for those devices setting specific DNS servers.

Any linux/windows dhcp server solution can do specific options for client with dhcp reservations, just most routers won't.

Here is the thing... Unblock-us won't work well for TelstraClear users if browsing to websites but since Roku doesn't use the standard http requests it bypasses the proxy. If you put this in the router than it won't affect your other PCs except if trying to access those site unblock-us "unblocks".

I found I can create multiple VLANs in my router, each with its own DHCP. I could possibly put everything in the 192.168.2.x subnet but split into two VLANS - one with the standard TelstraClear DNS for our PCs and one with unblock-us DNS for a Roku only.

My router only allows a single DNS address to be specified (if DNS proxy is OFF) but unblockus seems to require 2 DNS addresses - will this matter?

No it would not matter. Entering the primary DNS will work fine.

Have you managed to rent/buy a movie from Amazon Instant Video? Looking at one of the support pages on Unblock-Us there a couple mixed opinions on whether it could be done directly through the Roku or if it had to be done through the Amazon website first.

It's been a while since I bought content but I recall it was not easy as I had to use a VPN as well as US credit card. That might have changed now. Once the content is purchased it just shows up when you login with the Roku.

I haven't purchased content for a long time because I tend to watch the free stuff available via Amazon Prime.

All dependant on the $US/NZ$ Exchange rate. But both Netflix and Hulu+ are US7.99 per month

Do these services have to be paid by a US based credit card? Or is ip range checking (covered by unotelly etc) the only major block these days?

Yes. Although Netflix is not as fussy. I was at one stage using my Westpac credit card but am now using an AirNZ debit card for both.

I can confirm that. I just updated my credit card from a US one to a BNZ Visa and it worked fine. I just used a random zip code. You could use 90210:-)

just ordered mine from the actual roku site which will be delivered to my youshop address. Cost me $118 NZD. Wonder what the cost for shipping to nz be. :D
