Reality is that it's still too early. Fast forward a few years and we'll be there.

This generation has really moved to more convenience, less quality, so I expect streaming to really take off and I'd expect this will be the last of the physical media, or at least physical media will become a niche market, like vinyl is now. Bluray is still vastly more content than a streamed movie. Bitrate still has a part to play over straight resolution.

Bluray bought along uncompressed audio, so unless this is being substantially improved, most existing receivers should be able to play the audio delivered over hdmi? Simply means one hdmi to the display device for video, and another, or ARC on from the TV to the receiver for audio.

PS4 is quite old now, released around Dec 2013. I'm surprised the price has stayed as static and high as it has really. Maybe the upcoming PS4.5 will be a bit more capable, but essentially it's old tech and pre this 4k bluray arena.

Are the region codes still the same as ordinary BD?

Thankfully no, the UHD discs are region free as per the UHD standard. However in the US the studio's are shipping the UHD discs as a combo, so while the UHD disc is region free the regular Bluray retains the region protection.

Received my discs! Although classic first world problem, no player yet!

Are they not going to implement Geo-Locking though? So even if they are not Region Coded at the moment, the player can detect which country you are in and stop them from working?

UHD discs will play anywhere, my player is geolocked for the streaming apps but not discs. But the bluray discs that accompany the 4k discs will be region locked.

Also ps 4.5 is just upscaled 1080 not 4k natibe so wont play these discs

UHD BluRay Is on it's way very soon but there is no word yet on available player models in NZ the biggest thing to consider when going to 4K BluRay is it is going to set you back a new player where the price is yet to be announced and it is hugely beneficial if you have a new 2016 UHD (4K) TV that has only started to emerge into the NZ market now as they support HDR which with 4K BluRay gives you way better colour with darker blacks and whiter whites. 4K Blurray is already with NZ Suppliers.

Just got an email from mightyape here is NZ, they have and are selling the UHD discs but no retailer seems to have the either of the players yet, weird as I wouldn't think UHD discs would be available at NZ retail without a player to play them on.

Samsung has just had too many orders, they were meant to release by May now they dont even wanna say. Uhd discs come with normal bluray disc as well, so maybe they think its worth the early release. I just watched revenant in uhd and it was mind blowing (watched with friends and all said this is the best quality they have ever seen apart from imax) id rate the visuals on par with lfe of pi but revenant edges it because fire and starry nights look insanely good in HDR any theres a lot of scenes with fire and stars in revenant lol

The Samsung UBD-K8500 should be here pretty soon, as it started arriving in Australian retail stores (like JB HiFi, and online retailers like Rio) at the beginning of this week. Panasonic NZ and various retailers I've spoken to have all said the DMP-UB900 won't be here until the third week of July at the very earliest. Mighty Ape have UHD discs in stock, and so does the Warehouse online, and they're quite a bit cheaper ($33 vs $40, search for '4k Blu-ray').

I want to get the UB900, and they can be imported from the UK using ebay or similar, but the total price bumps it over the limit required for a client code and supplier code by customs. The Samsung is cheaper, so doesn't have this problem, but it's limited to 110v (luckily I still have the step-down transformer from when I imported a Toshiba HD-XA1 HD-DVD player back in 2006). I would rather wait for a player to be released locally, but I'm getting impatient.

Getting customs code, is easy. Fill out pdf form include copy driver license and done in 2 days.

(i did this the other week to import my HTC Vive)

Import from UK so don't have voltage problems.

I already have a customer code, but companies in the UK selling through ebay don't normally have a supplier code, which is the problem.

I preordered the samsung player pretty much when it was announced and used you shop and when it was released I got it in less than 2 weeks, you shop made the process so easy in terms of customs, if i could afford the panasonic i would just go with amazon and youshop, spent about $800 for the player including customs shipping and a jaycar stepdown. Saw an e-mail this morning from Mightyape with UHD blu-rays for sale, tweeted them and they confirmed no players available. Also saw some for sale in JB Hifi Queensgate today also, same story no players available.

Seems odd to sell these when there is nothing available in NZ that can play them

This part of their blog actually made me laugh:

"Just like the switch between VHS and DVD, or more similarly DVD and Blu-ray, the 4K Blu-ray or ‘Ultra HD Blu-ray’ is not compatible with existing devices and requires its own player – many of which are hitting the market now."

When I think of 'many' I don't think 'two, and none here'.
