my view on smart tvs is, errr, dont get a non android tv one. my samsung 2013 smart tvs are pretty dumb now with apps disabled. and they have become very slow. android tv is great, but the sony tv android chips arent all that fast, and can be slow to start sometimes (tvs dont usually turn off, just the screen, so first boot or full reboot its slow, other times its in the app where you left it).

If i was deciding between two very similar tvs and the price for a android tv vs a non android tv was $200 or there abouts, i would spend the extra $200, but no more than that.

having one remote with everything built in is nice, but you cant upgrade the cpu/memory and in a few years its going to feel sluggish most likely.

That's the biggest selling point for me. I currently have a bunch of boxes (Roku, Chromecast, Freeview box) connected to the TV - I'd love to consolidate down to just the TV. I might be just dreaming...

a harmony ultimate one is a pretty great remote, most of my tvs use those, and then its just one remote basically. no voice input for android tv (my sony android tv is using the sonys remote), but I find I dont use that all that often so might replace it with a harmony one.

I would personally like to see a usb powered stick sized device that accept ethernet running android tv, but im probably dreaming there. i like the reliability of ethernet over wifi but I also like the small foot print of a fire tv stick and the ability to completely hide it and just have a tv on the wall with nothing under it (well except for a sonos playbar).

something I could easily upgrade every couple of years for less than $100 would be ideal. maybe one day....

I have had my eye on (two) Nvidia Shield TV's. (Currently have older Fire TV's, but want to swap them out as they don't support H.265). The cost is a bit high, which has been making me delay

Keen on something that doesn't need Kodi sideloaded, ruling out later fire TV's.

Does this box support automatic frame rate switching (I'm not a fan of 3:2 pulldown).

Ethernet isn't listed in the spec's which isn't ideal for me either.

Obviously entirely up to you, but FTV apparently does H265, has Ethernet, and is less than half the price (of Shield). Though you have to do the sideloading bit, as I'm sure you know. OTOH you could use use Emby / Plex and their FTV apps if so inclined. Just a thought.

a big selling point for me on the android tv is the google ecosystem. finally having a place where I can buy/rent movies in one place and not worry about the service not running on some devices. with youtube apps everywhere most of those support playing your purchases/rentals via that.

ive used vudu in the past, xbox video, itunes etc. but theyre limited in the devices they support. android tv makes it easier to rent/buy movies via google play which is nice. sure i dont use this all that much, but if i want to watch a movie that isnt on netflix etc, its usually on google play.

What's the difference between this sort of android TV and a Chromecast.

It looks like the new Chromecast Ultra does 4K and HDR.
They only think I can think of is playing MKV files and I haven't read anything either way about the Chromecast Ultra supporting MKV.

chromecast is just a "casting" device. i.e. it has no input itself, you have to send things to it via a phone/tablet/computer.

this is a interactive device with menu/remote which needs no other device to be used (well except a tv :P). this also has the chromecast ability built in, so you can cast from a phone/tablet/computer to a mibox as you would a chromecast, but you get the full menu/remote/apps with it, making it a lot easier to use IMO.

reven: Google play movies, lightbox all, better search and interface. H265. Fire tv 2 does h265 as well, but not first gen or first tv stick.
Fire TV's are good, I just prefer Android tv

If you buy or rent a movie with Google Play it's available in you Youtube (under purchases) provided the Google Play and YouTube accounts are signed in to the same google account. So you can rent/buy a movie with Google Play on your smart device and watch it with your FireTV via the YouTube app.

Juts ordered the Mi Box 4K with Android 6.0 TV direct from Mi. $69 US with free shipping to YouShop. A bit of a nightmare entering the address but I got there in the end. Now we wait ...

I just ordered one from Aliexpress for $79US (free shipping). 13-20 day delivery time, though last time I ordered something from aliexpress it came a lot quicker than expected.

Mine arrived from youshop yesterday, a lot quicker than my sony tv with built in android tv. havent had a chance to pair a ds4 to it to test gaming yet (wouldnt pair, might be a flat controller, will try again tomorrow also try a xbox one controller and report back).

really impressed with this, so ordered 3 more off aliexpress :)
