Thanks Duffuss for your contribution.

I still have my old plasma and have yet to purchase a new 55“ TV. I have a few questions please:

1. Which model LG 55” did you buy? Was it this year’s C7?

2. You say you watch Sky sport on it and the picture is great. Do you have basic Sky TV, or like me have Sky High Definition (MySkyHDI)?

3. You said you have none of the issues mentioned. Does this include the blurred artifacts present in the YouTube review by HDTV Test, where the 2017 LG TV’s displayed motion blur in some instances when sent a 1080i broadcast signal (Sky high definition TV NZ use a 1080i signal). The review I am referring to is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9OvPfPd8s0&t=11s starting at 7 minutes 45?

4. Do you have your TV in a room where there is a lot of ambient/natural light during the day and if so, does it produce the magenta (purple) tint reflection (it’s the light reflecting off the TV screen that produces the tint). If so, is this an issue for you? A previous contributor PsychoSmiley mentioned he had this issue with his 2016 LG B6. Apparently this problem has been reduced in this year’s LG models, although the Panasonic 2017 EZ950U OLED still has this problem, which puts me off buying this TV.

You mention the picture on ESPN is not as good as on the other Sky Sport channels - I have no idea how this could be, as they are both HD channels.

The price there jumps around from day to day, and they seem to move the price up and down to price match whatever the lowest price in the market is. I'm pretty happy with the price, as a fortnight before they wanted to sell it to me for $8000 there. My advice is to keep a daily eye on Pricespy etc.

Couldn't really see much difference in LG vs Panasonic vs SOny OLED. There was some debate about if Panasonic and Sony are being supplied last years or this years LG panels. The LG obviously is using the latest generation panel.

Just waiting to get my TV wall mounted, then I will report back on the picture.

Out of interest, does anyone calibrate their new TVs, and if so how, and did it make a big difference?

In the UK, Panasonic have confirmed they are using the latest panels. I am waiting to pull the pin on the Panny - I want to see a few more reviews given the suspicion over which panel is being used. I'm going to have a good look in store this week - Harvey Norman Tory Street have the Panny side by side with the LG. Price is changing daily - yesterday the Panny was $6.9k at Harvey, today its up nearly a grand to $7.88k. It was $6.7k earlier in the month.

Definatly the HD option I can still remember when sky changed ESPN over to HD it was a revelation!

Will checK out the video tonight but I havnt seen any blurred artifacts motion blur (screen tears mentioned on other sites) whilst watchig the Skysport channels

Yes During the day the light starts at (5oclock If the tv is 12oclock morning)and finishes at 1 oclock yes it is anticlockwise northish facing lounge

No magenta purple tint reflection at all that I have noticed

ESPN comes in at 720dpi apparently

Some testing results suspect older gen panels, but Panasonic say the panels are the latest. In short, I'm happy to accept Panasonic's word on it - I trust their brand and reputation, but would like to read some more detailed reviews on their latest OLEDs as these are limited to date.

Is anyone running OLED in a "bright room" ie lots of windows and daylight as opposed to movie style setup dark room. Im tempted to replace a Panasonic 55VT Plasma (my oldest 55 not the 2x 65VTs in Lounge and Bedroom - yes I loved the Panny VT and own 4). Really torn as the reviews of the Samsung QLED for bright room really put it ahead but ew its LCD with a pretty name. Majority on the screen will be SD or HD via Plex. But on the other hand like others here to go from the Panny VT to anything else when you hate motion blur or a slightly off picture feels so hard. Very hard to find good bright room reviews.

The brightness issue as been perplexing me too. Especially as they say brighter sets will be better placed for managing future HDR material.

I've gone from a 65" ST60 Panny plasma (earthquake killed) to a new 55" Sony X8500D LCD. I'm thinking of ditching the Sony for a Panasonic OLED as the black levels from the edge lighting are doing my head in (especially for movies).

Motion blur on the Sony has not been an issue, so I'm not too worried about the OLED in this regard. But the brightness issue is one I am still looking into.

What I would really like to know is: How does the latest gen OLED compare to the last gen Panasonic plasmas for brightness? I have searched the net but all the comparisons I can find are OLED vs LCD.

I run the Sony on cinema mode at all times, so don't seem to require the extra brightness, so as long as the OLED is consistent with plamsa, I will be happy.

The extra brightness punch of QLED is interesting, but, honestly, it's a glorified LCD at the end of the day, so I can't see myself pulling the pin on it over OLED.

I haven't purchased a new TV as yet, so have not done a calibration, but AVForums do calibration videos on YouTube. I haven't seen a video on the C7, but they will likely do one in future. Does this include the blurred artifacts

Got home yesterday afternoon sure enough bright reflection on screen with magenta tint but the TV was off!

Turned it on and watched basketball game looking for the above blurred artifact as per the youtube video

Spent half hour looking for above.... aaarrrgggh what a waste of time in tiny flashes where there was black on screen long enough big enough I may have seen a tint.

looking at ball movement there might have been artifacts there might not have I certainly didn't see or notice

BUT I didn't have a clue what happened in the game total waste of time IMHO!!!!

Photography has pixel peepers who constantly looking for defects such as back focusing and edge sharpness they forget to go out and take photos and enjoy photography

Same applies here perhaps

If my new toy has a defect I certainly can't see any and if it's there it isn't annoying or noticble to me I am enjoying the content, For this reason I refuse to do the 5% greyscale boollocks people on AVS forums spend all their time doing looking for banding issues

Could I finally ask you please, your impressions of the picture quality of other channels via Sky HDI, i.e. TV1, TV2, Jones, Sky Movies, etc? How does it compare to the old Plasma TV? I could look at these on the LG C7 in Harvey Norman, but often their Sky signal is not great, as they run many TV’s through a splitter, so the picture quality is not as good as our picture at home.

As an aside, I was recently experiencing a bit more rain fade than usual, through my Sky TV satellite dish. I had the Sky TV contractor replace the sensor on the end of the arm on my Sky dish and am now receiving a much sharper picture than before. This was at no extra cost to me. This is worth considering.

My overall opinion is if you primarily watch pay TV that at most will push 1080i don't bother spending the money on an OLED as you are wasting what the technology can do unless you want to spend huge dollars for something that provides little or no benefit.

If you watch good quality content at 1080p via BD and/or 4K-HDR go for you life because you will not regret the purchase even if it's a cheaper 2016 model.

At the current price it's about the picture and all about the picture, don't waste your money if you spend your timing looking at sub 1080p content.

Had a look at the Panasonic OLED side by side with the LG yesterday at Harvey Norman, Tory Street. I definitely noticed some horizontal judder and ghosting around some movement on the LG that I could not pick up on the Panny. And colour looked more natural (to my eyes) on the Panny (I had both sets on default factory Cinema picture). That said, both sets looked great and I would be happy with either over my current LCD.

They also had a QLED in the line up. There is no doubt that it lacks the contrast relative to OLED - the picture was brighter and lacked the depth of OLED. And, yes, the backlight - I can see you. So, no thanks Samsung.

You have to have the right hardware and software to do a modern display for Rec2020 + HDR, Which includes the Light sensors, Software and Video Generators.
I've recently upgraded software and hardware to handle these formats.

@NzBeagle , the issue was two fold, first we tended to be behind by a year with releases which was arguably was due to supply and NZ last on the list. Secondly, related to different firmware in NZ which didn't have auto cal options and other features. The last of the Plasmas carried everything except the Calman autocal.

Regarding environmental conditions.

The advantages of the OLED over a LED-LCD is negated in daytime bright room conditions.
In other words, in a bright room your perception of black is lifted, which narrows your perceptual dynamic range of the OLED(You won't be able to see dark gradations). The LED-LCDS can run brighter and consequently have better dynamic range in bright rooms.

The main problem for LED-LCD is viewing angle, but if you are fighting daylight the LED-LCD is still better.
