I returned one of my Shields to Nvidia direct, cost me shipping but I got a new unit without much hassle. Warranty or not dodgy firmware will be covered.

You will always take a risk on buying overseas but for the savings it was worth it considering the units were not available in NZ in 2015 and both of my units cost $320 NZD to the door at the time.

Home Server: AMD Threadripper 1950X, 64GB, 56TB HDD, Define R6 Case, 10GbE, ESXi 6.7, UNRAID, NextPVR, Emby Server, Plex Server.
Lounge Media Center: NVIDIA Shield TV 16GB: Kodi18 with Titan MOD, Emby.
Kids Media Center: NVIDIA Shield TV 16GB: Kodi18 with Titan MOD, Emby.
Main PC: Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB RAM, RX 570, 2 x 24"

Great news the Shield is coming here! I have had one for probably 2 years now and its awesome.

I use mine as my main tv interface - have OTA freeview via tvheadend/rasp pi running inside kodi

You can side load most apps - I use lightbox and skygo apps on it - you just have to use either an airmouse or the controller right stick to use the cursor to select things. Also have tvnz and three apps on it

The little remote is ok, but it is a little small and slippery and you touch the volume slider accidently easily. I now use a chinese air mouse with it and its better having dedicated buttons for most things (vol, channel numbers, keyboard etc, and can turn on the air mouse cursor quickly when needed)

I want to get another one for our second / kids lounge so will have to decide on whether to import myself or not now.

They have a very specific power supply (a rectangle shape plug into the shield), will be interesting if they actually will come with a nz power supply or will just have an adaptor on it like we all use now.

As for the ATV platform on the shield does anyone know if it supports nz based apps ie lightbox or fta apps?

Not properly, but I have them sideloaded, you just have to use the right stick on the controller, or an air mouse and they work fine. You cant use the little remote. I have lightbox, skygo, tvnz and threenow working without much difficulty. I also needed a rotation type app from play store so it would force the apps into landscape mode

But I have just seen in another thread that there is actually an android tv version of lightbox (must be for sony tv as you cant install it via the play store as usual) but it looks like you can side load it and it still works good on the shield. Will try it tonight, looks promising!

I would guess yes, if you can't do it on the shield you won't be able to on any other android box

Iplayer works find on my Shield but I do most things through Kodi. For streaming I don't like the Shield interface and some other things. Kodi is much better.
