I came across an article on Gizmodo Aus that the Shield TV will be sold in Australia starting at $249.  I assume this is AU dollars as all the articles I could find were Au websites.
The Shield TV must be due for release/sale soon as the article says "We'll be spending some time with the SHIELD later this week, and I'll have my thoughts for you when the embargo lifts"

Assuming the AU$249 is for the US$179(AU$241) remote only Shield TV then its pretty close on price.

I couldn't find an official press release but did find an article on the Australia PC World website saying that it will be available from "PB Technologies, Computer Lounge and Playtech in New Zealand."

I guess if your looking at getting a shield then maybe hold off a bit and see what happens in July to hopefully be able to by locally with NZ adaptor.

The Shield is on my wish list, but the budget is tight at the moment so no toy budget for me at the moment. However:

  • AU$249 = $NZ 262 at the current exchange rate of 92 cents.
  • US$179 = $NZ $263

PB Estimated price $329.95. That's just over 25% more than the US or Aussie prices. Once again the curse of supply via NZ retailers, local consumers get the product years late and at an inflated price when it does eventually land.

Probably better to order from Aussie than locally, even with a bit tacked on for shipping to here, as that will ensure the correct power adapter is included.

PB Tech is quoting the price for the Shield with a controller which is US$199 which converted is about NZ$299 but NZ has GST

Possibly. But my recollection is that when I looked at buying one about a month or so before Christmas, the retailer (I can't remember whether it was Amazon or B&H) had it for $US179 with the remote and controller at the time. I guess that might have been a sale price.

Also remember that we get CGA protection, which will be built in the price compared to Aussie/US imports.

Bought one of these from the US late last year - best device I've purchased in a long while - zero issues and it just got updated and is even better - even the WAF is 9/10 (apparently just having to turn it on separately than the TV loses a point).

Bought it for Plex and Netflix streaming - and it's great for those use cases but one of the things I didn't realize about it before buying was that it advertises itself as a Chromecast on your network - so it's fantastic for casting to; we've been streaming the World Cup from the Sky fan pass app and it's been superb.

We've been having issues with the v1 Chromecasts we have where they've been dropping off the network and being undiscoverable - this thing is just reliably there all the time.

Oh - and the box itself is tiny - the controller (bout the size of an XBox controller) is actually bigger than it. And the remote is great for general use... just don't try to type anything with it - and it's small and black... if you can't find it, look between couch cushions ;).

I'm going to buy another one for my den and deprecate the v1 Chromecast that's been annoying me.

Exiting time except this update from Playtech. Some hurry up and wait.

As for the ATV platform on the shield does anyone know if it supports nz based apps ie lightbox or fta apps?

15% for GST and 15% for Local warranty, doesn't seem in the slightest way unreasonable.

also you get the NZ power plug.  nz warranty, cga, power plug, get it the same day.  yeah I'd pay $50-$100 more for that.

Yup, CGA and warranty is definitely worth it for these sorts of goods in my opinion... I've got two units from Amazon US but don't look forward to them suffering issues!

So buy it, ship it via youshop and get no warranty.

You can't expect to get it for no GST because NZ companies to have to comply with local laws and pay local taxes.
