Just in case you were anticipating purchase of one of these Toshiba 65" TV's...don't. Or if you still want to I may have one cheap!

My 5 year old 60" 1080p Panasonic has a substantially better picture.

Issues with the Toshiba:

Severe backlight bleed...I thought the old Panasonic was bad, but this is a huge step backwards. See photo below.

Can't change any picture settings, brightness, colour or any menu settings while using Android...which includes Netflix. To change you need to select another input, then alter the picture settings.

Auto brightness default setting is dimwitted. It constantly goes dark and bright for no good reason.

Built in processing is really bad, seems to either overprocess giving a "blurred" motion or underprocess and looking terribly grainey.

Displays advertising, it displayed an R-rated trailer to our kids when the Android button was selected with no other content playing.

That's what I keep telling the wife.

But she doesn't seem to believe me. At least not when it comes to TVs. 😋

I'm reminded of that ancient Chinese proverb "No man ever went to his grave wishing he had bought a smaller TV"

I have a 65" OLED which I sit a mere 1 metre from when watching movies. When prices come down, I'll upgrade to a 75" and still only sit 1 metre away.

I checked my TCL TV and it does look a bit like yours but nowhere near as bad - but I have a feeling yours looks like that due to the camera trying to "enhance" the picture, so maybe it's not as bad, but maybe it is.

I can live with that sort of picture. I did compare my TCL with my rock bottom of the range 6000 series Samsung that the Samsung has perfect consistency, no edge bleed despite being edge lit. Just wow. But as I said, I don't notice it when watching moving video. But that's me.

What I'm concerned about though is the Android - TV GUI interface - I mean to need to get out of Android to access the TV settings is pretty bad.

And - there are Ads on the OS itself! yikes

The TCL Android you can control every TV GUI setting, it's very well intergrated. But the TV is darn slow, it takes about 10x longer to do anything compared to the very snappy bottom of the range Samsung. But Samsung got no Android. Android wins!

I was (surprisingly and naively, I admit) shocked to read that Android TV users are subjected to ads - WTH? Is there any relatively easy way of disabling them? Do all brands of TV/versions of Android have them?

I had been second-guessing my decision to go with an LG, however I will accept its relatively dumb interface/narrow app selection any day compared to having to put up with ads as part of the interface.

As for that LCD light bleed - yeah, as with the LG I did buy, there's no way I could cope with that on my main TV. I've decided I'd rather do without 4K and a larger screen than move to the patchy blacks of (affordable) LCD TVs. I was studying the image on our plasma TV last night, and it's not that the blacks are anything like the inky deep blacks of an OLED, but at least they're consistent - not something I could ever use to describe those three crude zones of greys on the LG!

my TCL android has no ads in the OS. some android apps have ads but it really depends on the app itself. netflix for example has no ads, as normal. youtube, some clips will have ads, as normal.

Don't buy junk TVs. Bad quality picture, bad user experience, going to turn into a giant paper weight long before you would otherwise have stopped using it.

Chinese domestic markets' Android installations have to connect and report to their government. That's usually excluded in foreign installations but it'd be interesting to see what it's reporting back if it's serving advertising. Adverts aren't restricted to Android smart TVs either. LG and Vizio have got into trouble with reporting back too much in the past.

The retailer should be informed if their TVs are inappropriately serving R rated ads.

Completely agree. Mistakenly thought Toshiba was still actually Toshiba rather than a re-branded junk brand, figured quality should be better than it was. Fortunately as the TV had a fault I was able to get it refunded.

I would say the Veons are actually better quality than the Toshiba TV's now.

We have replaced it with an OLED LG TV...there is simply no comparison at all. (Model OLED55C8 if anyone is interested)

This was discovered by the kids...when selecting though the input source one of the options is "Google Play". If that is selected with no content then it simply plays google play advertisements / trailers. You cant turn this off without removing the google account that is registered for use. Its a poor implementation of Android TV, but I reckon Android TV could be a heck of a lot better around parental control too.
