I got one from PlayTech when I saw from the email mailer that they have in stock. I got the controller bundled version with a stand. Set it up last night; it's going well. This to replace my Plex Media Server, replace the ageing TV's "smart feature", replace Apple TV 3, ChromeCast device, and using as Plex player too.

its a good idea after you get it - to do the 7.2.3+ test image upgrade on it because the latest image available is pretty poor form really

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1110161/shield-tv/shield-experience-upgrade-7-2-3-test-image/

Oh didn't realise this, mine has a few high bit rate streaming buffering issues (Tv seems to loose sync) so I'll try this!

By the way has anyone tried equipping a TV tuner USB to thier shield yet? if so, will it work with Freeview? eg https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TVNHGR1597/Hauppauge-WinTV-dualHD-USB2-Stick-Dual-DVB-TT2C-Tu

you would be better off trying to find a second hand hdhomerun imo.. it works well with the shield/android tv.

ShinyChrome:

Looks like it is back in stock in a few places: Computer Lounge, PlayTech, PBAndJamTech

Is it worth getting the controller included version if I have no real intention of playing games through it?

All I really want it for is as a 4K streaming box feeding into my receiver, so I can quit TV apps and ARC. If not, I might think about saving $70 and getting the remote only version.

I don't game on my shield but I do use the controller occasionally. Where it is useful is navigating through a browser to side load Apps. Navigating a browser using the remote is painful and using the controller is a little less painful.

I purchased this beauty for that purpose. Works on my phone too :-)

Really going off-topic :-)

That sounds like a good idea - Where do the channels show up on the shield, the Live Channels app or elsewhere?

ps Im trying to shut down my mysky decoder but struggling to find a way to view and record prime (the other channels have  apps and watch later capability) I'm assuming from what I read  homerun app can save tv recording to my synology NAS.

there is 2 ways, either the live channels or the HDHomerun app

i use livechannels, i find, its best to install the HDHomerun app first, then go into Live Channels, the HDHomerun will appear there twice now as a source, the frst HDhomerun option will have an EPG while the 2nd does not

i turn off timeshifting in the livechannels so it doesnt ware the internal shield storage out.

Plex Media Server (PMS) can interface with HDHomeRun as well.

A question about PMS; does PMS keep running even when Shield TV is put to sleep? I can't seem to access the content, yet through https://plex.tv/web I seem to be able to access my Shield TV's PMS yet it gave me (!) next to my libraries.

yes PMS/Kodi etc can do it as well, PMS its kind of a s##$box tho, slow streams  (compared to HDHomerun and LiveTV apps), buggy aspect ratios on some channels when viewed on android tv they still havent

fixed after 1.5 years

however if you do use PMS for it this is the xml to use https://forums.plex.tv/t/poor-progam-guide-information-in-new-zealand/

if you try and play something with the ! what happens? it shouldnt be running when it sleeps afaik.  i dont use PMS on my shields however. there seems to be some PGS limitation with PMS

on the SHIELD which would kind of make it useless for alot of the 4K HDR linux isos. (only when PMS is enabled on the shield, using it as a client only is not a issue)

Looks like the usual round the rumor mill stuff: TechRadar, 9To5Google, Android Authority, Android Police

Most importantly, they all seem to suggest a minor revision rather than a complete new generation.

Also looks like the current Shield will get Pie at least

Yep, was looking to be a minor update, so I pulled the trigger and mine should arrive today. I can finally ditch my old WD TV :)

Looks like rounders are true. Still little detail but faster processor would not be bad thing

It upgrades to Anrdoid P (amongst other fixes.)

I'll hold off updating until the guinea pigs have finished their testing ;)
