I've got an older Yamaha receiver paired with an LG UK7500 and I had no end of issues with arc between the two. Eventually I ended up just abandoning the entire thing and have really weird settings that somehow control the receiver using CEC but pass the actual audio over optical. Set up wise mine will pass through 4K video but not HDR, so I have the switch running through the receiver then everything else through the TV which gets the job done giving the best image and passing at least DD through sound wise.
All the playing I ended up doing I found Dolby digital+ to be the common fault with mine, I could get TV sound just nothing from Netflix or Amazon or anything utilizing DD+. Occasionally I could force the Netflix app to restart and get sound but it was always short lived, it was as if the trigger to tell the receiver that's what it was getting just wouldn't fire and it saw nothing via the arc connection. All other formats were fine from all sources it was just DD+ that I never got to work.

That's hilarious, only DD+ is working on mine but none of the other formats.
I had read that eARC was supposed to be more stable and reliable in that sense and investing in the Sharc was supposed to eliminate potential Yamaha AVR ARC issues as to the Yamaha it should just be another input (theoretically).
I'm thinking that either the cable is faulty or there is a setting on the TV that will passthrough all audio that I can't find. I have a bunch of HDMI cables in the shed that I'll dig out and experiment with later today. Meanwhile, still waiting on a response from the Next Audio team who manufacture the Sharc.
I also used the latest beta firmware for the Sharc and maybe it is not as stable.
Turned everything on today and decided to change the HDMI audio option on the tv to auto and everything worked! I had true HD audio when watching LOTR.
I was ecstatic. Turned everything off and put everything back, did some cable management.
Turned the tv back on and back to dolby digital. Very annoyed at this stage.
Turned it all off, turned it back on, this time AVR first and it worked again.
So i think it was a combo of the tv setting and turning equipment on in the right order.
