May I ask PLEX users here on how I can clear the library of old content that does not exist.
Didn't want to create another forum topic for a trivial query. Sorry for the hijack!

I use the PLEX app on my Sony TV to connect to a HDD that stores all my movies.
The HDD is run off a NUC that I use to download content. ( all on the same WIFI network)

Last week the HDD failed (bad sectors etc), and I had to reformat it and start again.
But the PLEX library still shows movies that are no longer there.  Clicking on the thumbnails or metadata of the movies
show the details with a brief synopsis of the movie, actors etc  but obviously cannot play.

I have re-scanned the library and also logged out and logged in, but this cache remains unchanged.

Thanks

Try deleting the app (which should take all its data with it) and then reinstall it....

That's a bit overkill lol

*edit* Make sure all the scheduled maintenance tasks are enabled under Settings - > Scheduled tasks, the library refresh should remove the episodes/movies, but if you want the metadata gone as well, those tasks should take care of it, albeit on a weekly basis.

Possibly valid, I'm certainly at the err.. "enthusiast" end of Plex lol

On a per-library case, I open the plex app, https://plex.tv/web, Go to settings, Manage, Libraries, select the vertical ... next to the library (when hovering over it) and select empty trash.

jjnz1: Sorry post edit - this is bloody hard to navigate on mobile!
Anyone care to share their rough Total Cost of Ownership?

Might help convince purchasing all those subs 😂

The total cost of ownership for my server is...... high! I prefer not to calculate it, or advertise it to my spouse.

If you think that running a media server is likely to be a money saver relative to streaming subs, then it won't be. Even if you were to (hypothetically of course) acquire your media for free by hoisting the Jolly Roger it would still be high. Servers and hard drives add up (even on sale, 18TB spinners cost about $800, a decent 10-bay NAS costs circa $2K etc), and the time cost on top of that is also large.  You will be disappointed if you get into it thinking you will save a lot.

I enjoy it because it's a bit of a hobby. I strangely find ripping disks, and curating and organising the media, to be a nice way to decompress when I'm stressed (sort of like stamp collecting I guess). I like that my media doesn't disappear randomly from a service before I've finished watching it, and I get joy from watching my family enjoy something that I built. I don't do it to save money.

Plus, we still have a couple of streaming services as well.

Thanks. Have tried that by logging in using the browser. Will check the app on the TV .  I think its best to delete this library?

I play plex direct streaming off my seedbox to my xbox but it is very hit and miss with 4k stuff if it works or not, 1080 is almost faultless so thats what I get from the high seas the most often for things I just want to watch. Only movies I bother to bring down to my local plex server that will stream perfectly fine to the xbox. No idea why there are problems since the transfer speeds when FTPing off the same server are well above what is needed for 4k playback. Guess thats just plex being inefficient with its networking or the xbox.

All sorted now. Thanks.  Managed to delete the library using the Media Server on the NUC.

I have been using Jellyfin for a while and I am very happy with it. I have not used Plex, as I prefer FOSS so I compare it to that.

Jellyfin has clients/apps for Kodi, Roku, Android and several smart TV's.

I also use the TVheadend plugin on Jellyfin which works nicely.

There is a bug when using Jellyfin in the web browser which enforces transcoding when it is not necessary to transcode; while frustrating it is not a deal breaker and will be probably get fixed at some point albeit slowly.

I love the Jellyfin for Kodi app, I installed Kodi on some raspberry pi's and then connected them with Jellyfin.

I made a video reviewing Jellyfin 2 years ago.

Hi Plex Users,

I get the occasional discounted PlexPass lifetime subscription offers.

I am a simple user ie:
( NUC running Plex Media server with movies on external HDD, connected to Sony Android TV and using Plex app to watch movies and also watch PLex live TV)

Is there any benefit to get a PlexPass for a simple setup as mine? Their Tidal offer is enticing as I have a Spotify account.

Thanks

I would consider myself to be like yourself, a fairly simple user. I used Plex free for years and had never came across a situation where I needed a Plex pass. The last time the Lifetime offer came up I decided to buy in, not because there was functionality I was missing out on but just because I wanted to support a great piece of software that I've been using for many years.

Since then I've gone on to use some of the features of a Plex pass (downloading movies and TV shows from my library to an iPad to watch off line while camping).

All up I'm happy that I've contributed to the service. I may or may not use many more features of the Plex pass but i'm OK with that.
