Just ordered the tivo and 2 onns from amazon which was offering free shipping on order over $49 despite it being 3rd party sellers so will see what actually arrives.

the 2024 model onn? you got an amazon link? cheers

No idea which model, just searched for onn 4k and there were 2 that would ship here from third party sellers with the free shipping so ordered one from each.

This is the one you want.

freitasm:

I have both an Amazon Fire TV and a Chromecast with Google TV.

We use the Amazon Fire TV 4K most of the time. It's faster and supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The main pro for Chromecast with Google TV is that if you want to watch rentals, you can do it from the device. With the Fire TV you need to rent on your phone or PC, then you will have access to it.

Other than this, pretty much all other streaming platforms are on Fire TV.

On this recommendation I picked up a new in box Fire TV 4k on trade me for $81 delivered. Very happy, it intergrates with old LG tv so that it can be a one remote solution. Great to ditch old Freeview streaming box, won't miss any functions or the glitches.

:)

lookout: Just an update to OP - I ended up going with an AppleTV 4K.

I know... but I feel there are too many compromises with the Android boxes that are available here (just my opinion!). If Shield was easier to get in NZ that might be the one.

Apple TV is super snappy. Great remote. New model has hdr10+ which suits my Samsung tv.

Infuse is great for videos on my NAS and Real Debrid (WebDAV).

Apple is now allowing emulators which makes it a pretty cool gaming machine too.

Just my 2c. I know they are a lot more expensive than the Android /Amazon options.

Good choice. IMO the Apple TV and Nvidia shield are by far the best choices in this space. I’ve got fire sticks as well but I’m over Amazons advertising spam. We use the LG interface over the Amazon one on the tv we have that doesn’t have Apple TV hooked up.

Tidal have pulled their amazon support and I am guessing that others will follow if they cant just upload their normal android software with tweeks.

I have not talked to any amazon app developers to know what changes they may have announced but the commitment to changing the OS would probably drive many away from it before they announce anything. Best leave it sooner rather than later.

My first onn device arrived and its the older model without ethernet or far field voice, but it works fine and was cheaper than any other 4k capable google tv device. It set up fine and installed all the local apps that I then had to remove from it when I set it up, no trace of anything walmart on it and appears to playback stuff fine. Not looked into what codecs the older one supports and not hooked it to a 4k screen yet as I only have a couple of them and one is a monitor I use with one HDMI in on it.

Do not get the TiVo stick. Required a TiVo account and has lots of crap on it. Also no app only mode.

The older 4k onn stick is quite capable and half the price of a 4k Chromecast. Can't find the new one with the microphone etc for sale other than on Walmart so probably just have to wait for the returns to show on Amazon from the resellers.

i saw you can put another launcher on it with just the apps you want, no recommendations etc etc. my tivo hasn't even shipped yet, might go watch some more reviews and cancel it if it looks too spammy.

soggychups: Anyone manage to get an onn 4k box yet?

just noticed theres some 2024 onn's on ebay, at a bit of a markup but since my order from the previous version was cancelled twice by walmart for unknown reasons it might be the only way.

2 days later.... just signed up to https://www.myus.com/stores/how-to-ship-walmart-us/ for a one off shipment and ordered it from walmart. my previous address at walmart was my nzpost you shop US address and walmart wouldn't deliver there so i'm not holding my breath.

just realised i gave walmart the wrong myusa address for the 2024 onn, guess i'm destined to never get one.

but my tivo stream did turn up, basically just a google tv with a slightly nicer remote than my chromecast but more services that either aren't available or i don't want.

after a bit of googling i installed Button Mapper and FLauncher from the play store on both chromecast and tivo so have a minimal home screen with just the apps i want and none of the recommendations noise. 90% happy but will look at other alternative launchers if i get bored with FLauncher.

got the myusa address fixed up and the onn was delivered today. not cheap shipping from myusa, they charged $US50 for DHL. maybe they would have had cheaper options if i didn't sign up for a one off delivery.

the onn's pretty nice. better remote (backlit buttons, a find my remote button on the main unit) than the chromebox, maybe not quite as nice feeling the hand as the tivo. seems a little faster moving around than the chromebox but realistically all 3 play netflix, plex, youtube fine.

default home screen is just as cluttered and noisey as the others but flauncher or wolf launcher takes care of that.

Thinking of pulling the trigger on the Onn 4K box. Would you recommend over the Mi Box 4K or Chromecast 4K?

What did you pay? About NZ$130 or so all up? How long did it take to arrive.

yeah i guess but mainly as it has a better remote than the google chromecast, otherwise it's very hard to notice any difference with speed etc.

the shipping blew out the budget due to not knowing how much myusa would charge, theres possibly cheaper delivery options if you sign up for a full account. it was $NZ80 for the onn and $NZ92 for myusa DHL. i screwed up the myusa delivery address so that took a couple of days to sort out but i think from walmart to myusa was like a day and a half and about a week to get to NZ once i sorted out the correct address.

you not going to wait for the new google box?

the tivo is similar to the onn and chromecast, you can have that for $80 lol.

The new Google TV Streamer 4K will be released in September. I believe it will be available in NZ as the current 4K is. It's hard to go past Google's long support life and local availability. NZ price is not announced I'm guessing $149. It has Ethernet jack built in.

Actually i forgot all about the new Google box. Might wait and have a look at that.

Currently using a Mi Box 3 which is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Really only need a new box for IPTV and Plex, but I want something that is grunty enough for them to work properly.
