Rollux: Been following this post, but am quite new to this side of things(software and programs, better at hardware)
I have built myself a MCPC, using XP MCE 2005, (E6420, Asus 7600GS Silent, Nova-s tuner) and am trying to get Freeview also to run. I have a 3 year old Sky dish on the roof.
Now, I'm not capable of registry hacks and the likes, but have a friend who is. My questions are

1: Will I need to change anything on my Dish?

As long as your sky dish's LNB can recieve vertical polarity signals you should be ok

In WINTV app it shows I have a sat signal when told to scan Optus D1 Satellite, however says "no services found"

if you have already applied the reg hack, WinTV won't find any channels.  You need to "undo" the hack by changing the DVBS_AS_DVBT setting to 0 again and rebooting (which will stop it from working in MCE of course)

2: The hacks that have been posted apply to Vista MCE. Will these work for XP MCE?

Same reg file for WinXP or WinVista - the file is a hack for the Nova-S-Plus card, rather than for MCE.  It will 'fix' or 'break' all applications, not just MCE.

I'm sorry for posting what are prob silly questions, but i am completely new to this. Any help will be muchly appreciated

It *is* all rather confusing :-)

Thanks for your help!!!
I haven't done anything other than installed the software that came with the card. I have my friend coming over on Friday to have a look at this thread and see what he can do with it. I'll let you know how we get on.
BTW, how do I tell if the LNB will receive vertical polarity signals??

Rollux. Have you got a NOVA-S:
http://www.progdvb.com/card_pics/nova_front.jpg

OR a NOVA-S Plus?:
http://www.stegcomputer.ch/prodspics/hauppauge/Nova-Plus/nova-s-plus_board_front.jpg

If you have a NOVA-S

Please read this article I wrote on how to put your NOVA-S DVB-S Card (AKA TT 1500S) into pseudo DVB-T mode for use in Microsoft MCE by using the tool provided by technotrend. The tool was created to help with the exact problem you are facing. i.e. no DVB-S support in MS MCE. No reg "hacks" needed! :D

Hope it helps. :)

I have a Nova-S, not a plus. I hadn't actually noticed that this thread mainly applied to the Plus, so thanks for pointing this out. My friend is coming over tonight, and between us both we should be able to work it out with the help you have given us. Thank you very much

Ok, so altho the invoice I had for my tuner card is for a Nova S, I've actually got a Plus. Bonus. Anyway, my mate came over last night and he had a read of this forum and applied the suggestions. Firstly, the TT tools DVBMapper will not recognise the Plus card, says there is no card installed. So we tried to install the drivers for it from the TT Tools pack, but that prevented the PC from booting up - Bad Idea!! Rolled back, prob solved.
Used the reg hack, now MCE finds that there is a tuner, but cannot find any channels. Tried both LNB frequencies listed (have a 3 year old sky dish), but no luck.
Am I safe to assume that my LNB cannot receive the right polarity signals? I'm going up to have a look when the frost melts off the roof(!) is there anything I should take particular note of?

Many thanks again for the help
Dan

There is little chance that the LNB is single polarity. At no time was there any LNB's that Sky provided that were single polaity. There are rumours that some early LNBs (ie from the year 1000, 900, and 98 to the year 2000)  in particular California Amp ones that had faults preventing them from seeing Hpol. However as your dish is only 3yrs old it will undoubtably have a Sharp LNB and most likely have a LO of 11300MHz. Have you checked that the DC Power is on from the card. Also some LNB's do funny things if the 22kHz tone is on, check that is off.

?? Is there a setting in the software to power up the dish? I assumed it was automatic.

I assume this is a card setting?

FYI, using the reg keys from this thread, and following the VISTA EPG setup guides from reven.co.nz, I have successfully got a dual tuner NOVA S Plus VISTA machine running with all FTA channels.

Quick Note:- The picture quality improvement over my old dual analogue setup is negalible from normal viewing distances on channels that I recieved well via analogue. (on a 42" HD plasma).  The biggest plus is  I now get TVONE crystal clear as well.  Just in time for the americas cup !

Will miss prime however!  dammmmmmm sky for buying them, otherwise Im sure prime would have been on freeview.

Cheers for the thread guys, helped now end.

I've just found that I also cannot receive any channels thru the WINTV app (with reg hacks rolled back). I think I must have a prob with something other than MCE. Might have to get someone to come check that the dish and LNB are receiving properly.

Rollux: Have you disabled the MCE services? In my experience XCE likes to "take over" the receiver hw and this can prevent other tv apps funtioning correctly.

Thanks guys for all the great info, I've been able to get my dual HVR-4000's working a treat in VMC. I now have all channels in pristine digital. The only hickup I had was trying to get a universal LNB, which needed a 22khz switch tone, working. I ended up just swapping it for an ordinary LNB and it worked straight away.

Finaaly got it all sorted. Got all channels no probs. LNB is a 10.75, not 11.30, so when I changed the settings properly to 10.75 (not just the numbers but the coding as well) it works sweet. Now just have to get round to setting up the EPG.
Thanks to all who offered their help to a n00b, really appreciated it.
