How are you guys going with plex live tv?

Looking to move over to it, obviously have to move up to plex pass which i want to make sure is worth it

I have an hdhomerun, plex server installed on a fairly high spec machine, the server setup the hdomerun just fine.

But, it does not really work. I get errors when I select a show from my IOS device.

It does seem to be a waste of time just now, the epg is pretty awful too, and you cannot watch plex live tv from a windows machine.

I can see it has potential , but right now, it is buggy and hopeless.

Thanks for all the replys, might seem taht its not that great. Im changing from windows front end boxes to android tv boxes. Managed to get the live tv into the actual live channels android app which is nice. EPG is a mess but it work perfect for streaming. This just a short term fix though till i get some time on the weekend to look at actually patching mediaportal tv server into either kodi or the mediaportal app they have for android tv.

Live channels on android tv is so close to be the perfect front end interface, just need some one to build the tv server backend that ties directly into it

As I've mentioned before, could try Emby. Not saying its perfect, and you might have to pay for a months trial to check out how TV works, but nothing ventured.

(besides, just giving it a plug).

Works on Windows btw.

Yes, i actually was looking into it last week ill give that a bell too as it sounds plex is out.

Where is your plex server (machine type)? And what is your tuner type.

I just tried native recording via plex last night and it seemed to work...but on windows there are other solutions. It all depends how integrated it is. Native plex (or emby or kodi) are normally better as there some cross platform support for clients, and they give a consistent interface.

With Kodi, you get lots of clients, but it has flexibility of different backends - and i think native hdhomerun (connect0 support).

Plex - they have the arguably crap internal DVR/LiveTV, but theres a hdhomerun add in I think (from silcondust) and I have a live TV channel for NextPVR (plus a way of getting recordings in), and a lot of my code was based on a MediaPortal addin - but YMMV in terms of if that's still being developed/

Emby, I can't talk to as I've never used it.

In my limited use/reading of Emby and liveTV -

It also uses HDHomeRun devices as a native tuner/source. I only have DVB-S so use a PCI-E tuner in the main PC plus NextPVR as an intermediary (make sure NextPVR works fine then add NextPVR plug-in to Emby). Have used Mediaportal instead of NPVR and it also worked well for me. Being in NZ the Freeview OTA guide works fine except its not so good at identifying stuff - Breakfast TV comes up with a BBC Breakfast logo, etc. No idea how good it is for multiple tuners, as haven't got. Also to switch channels you (as far as I know) have to stop playing, go to the guide and pick another channel, it doesn't (again, as far as I know) just switch, i.e. if you're watching TVNZ1 you can't just press the '3' and change straight the 'Three'. Seems to record stuff OK though.

Has apps for FireTV, iOs etc. Also one for Kodi, so Kodi can use Embys central database

Basically im trying to update my whole network/server/streaming in my house to a bit more of a modern app based setup. Ive done the network, so next stop is media/streaming.

Ive been using mediaportal single seat install on a purpose built i5 win10 machine. Been using a variant of this setup since about 2006 and it has worked fine but im getting over dealing with windows on the computer and using crappy apps on mobile devices and never really got tv streaming working on mobile.

So basically if i could get down to 0 windows machines that would be great but ill take one server somewhere if i have too. It would be great to simply have a hdhomerun with a nas running both dvr and media server apps all feeding mi box's (android tv) and a few ipads but not sure if that will work so i might as well use my current i5 as a server with its usb and pci-e tuners and storage. Im just trying to find a solution that is both easy and works really well with android tv and remotes.

My kids and mother in law basically cant use the computer based htpc which is a driving force for chance since they would like too. I also love chromecast so thats why i have gone with android tv so its all integrated.

I have a few backend choices, currently its mediaportal for tv, plex for video files.

Front end currently is mediaportal for tv/video files and netflix (on the single seat win 10 pc in the lounge), then plex for video files on mobile due to chromecasting

Try that media portal plex channel. It may just do live tv, it may do recordings (acutally i should re look at that and see if I can get nextpvr recordings working again), while you may not be able to schedule recordings with it, you can watch them anywhere. Having just been turfed out of our lounge for a week for painting, to a telly that had no aerial (using a roku 3), we had no drop in watching broadcast tv for 2 - 3 hours a night (using nextpvr plex channel). I find it a not bad experience since in plex is where a bunch of our shows are anyway . Its getting a little fragmented now with shows in netflix/lightbox - but not too bad.

Think I've seem people running Emby server on a Pi3, and they have apps that'll run on Synology's and QNAP and stuff like that, but I'd use the i5 you've got anyway - come in handy for transcoding and you can keep topping up with hard drives as you accumulate stuff. Never used Mi box's or Chromecast though (but seen threads bout then on the Emby forum). Have used Emby to send TV from the main PC to another laptop and to a FireTV (though that's a bit pointless for me as the FireTV is plugged into the main TV which is where the Freeview box is). Kids use Android phones which play bluray rips fine via Emby, not sure about TV, having trouble finding something to watch I guess. I also (occasionally) play rips on my Windows phone, tried playing TV once, worked for about a minute then stopped.

Not sure about getting a guide for NZ TV using Homeruns. Is there an OTA guide for DVB-T ? Believe the best way is to use Schedules Direct, or it would be but they don't do a guide for NZ (or Aus) tv.

Shouldn't need Mediaportal or NextPVR is you've got a Homerun btw.

Also use ethernet were I can though wireless worked pretty well the last time I tried.

Also does all the metadata for stuff if you're into that type of thing, just check out the wiki on file structure / naming, but its pretty standard.

Couldn't find a list of supported models unfortunately, only this -

Yeah i dont havea hdhomerun but it looks like the device to get. You can even link it to googles own live channels app although not sure if there would be any guide. The new anrdoid TV setup taht was at googles developer conferences looks like it will integrate a lot of stuff include direct dvbt usb tunes and pvr into an android tv box. Could be quite a different setup this time next year

Do you have a tuner now? PCI/PCIe/USB? If any of these, then try Mediaportal/nextpvr if windows, tvheadend if linux. Kodi/emby (id assume) and plex should all have add ins for these to play with.

Yeah ive got tuners, had them for 11 years now. Got a usb and a pci-e one. The hdhomeruns look interesting, seem a bit hard to get hold of though
