Masterpiece: Regarding environmental conditions.

The advantages of the OLED over a LED-LCD is negated in daytime bright room conditions.
In other words, in a bright room your perception of black is lifted, which narrows your perceptual dynamic range of the OLED(You won't be able to see dark gradations). The LED-LCDS can run brighter and consequently have better dynamic range in bright rooms.

The main problem for LED-LCD is viewing angle, but if you are fighting daylight the LED-LCD is still better.

Thanks Masterpiece - do you have any thoughts how brightness for OLEDs compare against brightness for the Panny neo plasmas?

They were moderately good in their day with Rec709 1080p material, especially the VX100~300 and other professional series which didn't have the power restrictions of the consumer models. In the right lighting conditions they hold their own.

However with Rec2020 + HDR they will behave nostalgically to our memories of what was good and bad, as CRT's once did for some.

Keep in mind the term brightness is a subjective quantity based upon perception. A large image such as you find in a movie theater has relatively low light levels, yet because the image is large and environment dark your perception finds this acceptable, play the same material on your home display at movie theater levels and it is unwatchable.

The development of Rec2020 + HDR will eventually change all that and when displays are perfected and more source material becomes standard affair all 1080p models will pale in quality comparisons. A changing of the guard.

Also keep in mind Rec2020+HDR is supposed to be viewed with a small amount of back ground lighting on, this sets you eyes into the right range of "seeing" so that your perception of low level gradations is optimized whilst not being overloaded with the higher light levels of HDR highlights. Rec709 and P3 DCI are typically graded in dark conditions.

Now done a through look at the Sony A1, Panasonic 1000/950 and LG C7/W7 and I am totally sold on the Sony for me. If price was 3-4k less would buy and drool. Spoke with excellent JB and Sony reps and went over all the specs (Motion, Black Frame, Upscaling, tone mapping, screen reflections, daylight performance you name it) that matter to me. Next step is take in some crap media and see how goes which both companies are happy with.

In the end these things stood out

A1 - motion and upscaling incredible in a demo we did. Colour saturatation lower than others but fine, reflection levels low (best I felt and this and Panny 1000 stood out), sound very good did not try at max tho (some reports snag this), apps I wanted all available as use Google Play (twitch, wsl surfing, you tube are my main dont use netflix).

Panasonic - Can wall mount a 1000 by tilting bar down ...yay, sound on 1000 best but for me lacked bass (woofer apparently coming as add on), picture excellent, could not check upscale but JB says same as LG (6 step), app side poor with no support for what was after, 950 reflections ok only 1000 has filter which made noticeable difference side by side with the 950.

LG - apps good but I could spot motion/banding and once I did wham saw every time. Totally rules this out for me and I wanted to love it as the price for this or the Panny 950 I am much happier at. W7 ribbon rules it out for wall mounted for me.

Thats my impressions. I will be a Sony A1 or a Panny 1000 once prices come down. Just will depend on upscaling tests when can go do them.

Remember YMMV as motion and upscaling are my biggest things bar apps/dlna for main watching. None had freeview connected which was annoying so will find some sports to test with.

Saw the Sony A1 in person yesterday. It's interesting and impressive on the eye, but the easel design is not for me. It looks too bulky from the side, and I'm not sure how you would secure it on a cabinet (and this is important for me as the Kaikoura earthquake killed my plasma).

A HN salesman was at lengths to show me how the A1 folds up to sit flat. So I assume it would need some sort of mount on the back of a cabinet to be able to be truly vertical. Even if you were willing to free stand it, it has to sit well froward of the back edge of any platform.
Now that I have discovered that it does come in 55", it may be worth considering alongside the Panasonic EZ950 and the LG E7.

Hi all

So I finally got my new LG 65" C7 OLED mounted on the wall on Monday, and spent a bit of time watching it last night - I can now answer Pui's original question, as my set up is pretty much identical. I have a My Sky HDi and 95% of what we watch at home is through this.

The news is all good. I am pleased to report that the SD channels on Sky look acceptable on the new LG 4K OLED. There is none of motion artifact and very noticable blotchiness of colours that I saw at Harvey Norman, on their Sky setup. I had a good look at the Sky Sports channels, and saw no noticeable motion artifact with fast moving rugby balls, cricket balls, or the IAAF atheltic world champs. I was sitting on my sofa, and wasn't pixel peeping up close, so tit the artifact was there, it wasn't noticeable to me.

The HD channels on Sky (TV1, TV2, TV3, Prime) looked really good on the OLED. Smooth, crisp, natural. I haven't really explored all the picture settings in the sub menus, but did put it on "Cinema" mode, which other forums have suggested is the most natural mode. "Vivid" mode for me was way over-saturated colour-wise.

Disappointingly when I watched Game of Thrones on Soho, it was only SD, and looked disappointing. There was a noticeable improvement in GOT picture quality when I watched GOT previews in HD via YouTube.

There are various 4K trailers on YouTube, which looked stunning on the OLED. I haven't had the chance to test BluRay on it yet. Netflix looks great, but the snippet of an episode of Suits on Lightbox looked pretty average, and looked like it was just SD quality.

So all in all, on first blush, I am super happy with my new LG OLED. All the My Sky SD channels look ok to me, sport looks ok with no major motion artifact that I can see, and the HD channels look superb. Got to love the pure blacks on the OLED.

Hope that all helps. A few small things - not sure if I need to twiddle with the TV settings more to get the very best out of OLED (sharpness, contrast, brightness etc etc). I connected an optical audio out from my TV to my new Yamaha amp, as my AV guy said the sending audio through the ARC channel of an HDMI is a bit of a hit and miss affair in his experience.

I have just picked up a 65 Panasonic EZ950 and my impressions re picture quality line up pretty much with your first impressions with the LG. SD not so great, HD looks great. (I have yet to feed any 4K into it; note to self to do so).

For twiddling TV settings, I have turned sharpness right down and turned off all digital processing (that I can find).
