dont like the new settings menu. Still no reduce loud sounds setting or equivalent like Apple Tv has.  So Shield for my retro atari games and Apple TV for everything else. Watching movies and TV shows on Shield constantly have to increase and decrease volume. Apple just set it at desired level and leave it for whole movie. Much more pleasant experience.  Really wanted to like the Android TV but disappointed.

With regards to the original "where to get" thread title, does anyone have any experience of differences that may exist between Shields purchased in different regions?

From what I can gather on the interwebs it seems that a US Shield will show different pre-installed apps to a UK Shield (eg. missing BBC iPlayer app on a US Shield).

Apparently, even though there's only a single firmware package it "knows" which regional variation to install so you can't cross flash.

Does anyone have a UK Shield with iPlayer working via DNS4me or similar?

Dont know if it helps I got 1 from USA and 1 from Computer Lounge with intention of replacing htpc.  Apart from the USA one only having USA power plug and NZ purchased having several, the apps were the same.  Maybe it just depends on the region you actually set it up in.

I have 1 from the UK and 1 from the US. Both operate identically.

Any success with UK catch up apps?

I have a Shield with BBC iPlayer working with GetFlix. I needed to export the APK file, slightly rename it using APK Editor Pro, sign it and reload it. I spent a bit of time setting up my BBC iPlayer account using the browser (also via GetFlix) with the location for the account matching the post code correctly etc. Works a charm. I also had ITV working in the same manner, but due to the adverts I haven't used it, and haven't checked it's still alive currently.

The reason I needed to modify the APK is the Shield is super clever at figuring out where you are and hiding the app. Like, don't even bother trying to fool it.

Thanks.

Sounds like a bit of a mission, though.

One of those things which is a mission the first time but a 10 minute job once you have been through it once. If the Android TV 9 upgrade comes with a new version of iPlayer I will probably need to re-do it this weekend in fact.

You haven't managed to do the same with All4 ?

I'll upgrade and try the BBC APK trick. Having a stream of BBC news would be super handy!

Also using GetFlix here...

Because the Shield didn't include it I haven't tried adding it, it's not even Android TV native I gather, so it would need a pointer to navigate. I believe the Fire TV version is just a web wrapper and doesn't work on other Android TV devices.

Oh well, just a thought. Thanks. Am sure the world will keep turning...

I have All4 working on mine. There is a native Android TV app available. It will play local British content fine but the premium stuff like the Walter Presents stuff tells me it not available in our country. This is with either a DNS or VPN service.

I haven’t tried BBC as I knew it was pretty locked down.

autechre: Just an FYI, new version of Shield Experience has been released

yes i got it today as well. cant see any significant difference TBH

It upgrades to Anrdoid P (amongst other fixes.) I'll hold off updating until the guinea pigs have finished their testing ;)

your the smart one, so many bugs in it. one of my 3 shields is useless, kernel panic. another one has no HDMI sync to the tv on wake up intermittantly.

Known Issues after release as of 3/8/19

  • Multiple Streaming apps failing to play for small number of users, netflix errors 116/115. Root cause identified, fix being worked on, will be part of future 8.0+ HotFix Image. To resolve ASAP, Factory Reset will fix it.
  • The match content color space displaying incorrect format. Root caused, fix in testing, will be part of future 8.0+ HotFix Image.
  • Cropped content in Emby not playing in HDR. Bug found with Explayer is confirmed fixed in 8.0 but for some reason Emby is still not working, debugging
  • Can't set the default launcher. We'll add this back in the next release, got missed in the android p transition as we need to make some changes for it to work.
  • VC1 playback not working. Root cause understood, will be part of future 8.0+ HotFix Image.
  • Volume UI with android P too bright, takes too long to disappear. UI reworked, will be part of future 8.0+ HotFix Image
  • Some controllers joysticks snap back to the center at the end of joystick travel. Fix in 8.0+ HotFix Image
  • Youtube 5.1 PCM audio not working
  • IR volume control not working when anything is turned on in accesbility
  • When using Adoped storage, sdcard/InternalStorage not accessible. Root caused, will be part of future 8.0+ HotFix Image
  • Pointer appears in PubG. Will be fixed in next release.
  • System volume (Navigation) sounds lower in Android P/SE8.0 than Android O/SE7.x. Confirmed, reviewing reason for the change, considering to revert.
