Does the google streamer box provide any significant advantages than just having a Chromecast if using purely YouTube , Netflix and Amazon.

Not really that much. It's the next generation with a faster proc, additional streaming codec support, additional format support, more memory, and includes a built in Ethernet jack. It's a sensible incremental improvement. It's not intended to be much more than that.

I'd recommend a Dune player for anyone with content they want to stream from a HDD or NAS.

I have got the earlier version of this one and it's great  -particularly good at managing dvd and bluray menus and playing HDR and DV.

Why not an Amazon Fire TV stick? It will run Dolby Vision/Atmos, AV1 codec, HDR10, etc. And it costs a lot less.

Yes, I have one of those and use it when travelling. At home I like the way the Dune handles any file I throw at it and manages the aforementioned bluray and dvd menus. You can't get that with a native fire tv or even if you have Kodi installed.

I don't really know why you'd want to use DVD and Bluray menus. There are better solutions than 1:1 replicating a piece of spinning plastic.

This looks worthwhile for media. What is your experience with the Netflix and android app caveats?

I have used it for Prime Video and it's fine, Netflix requires you to use  a mouse pointer sometimes like older google tv boxes.
