was a budget custom system, only cost me a total of:

Yeah I'm totally happy with it :) doesn't dominate my lounge either, just compliments the rest of my furniture
cgrew: Interesting you've mentioned using bi-wired connections on your Wharfedale Diamonds. I've thought about doing that for improved high/low frequencies. It's just a matter of investing in new speaker wire that is bi-wire.

Well, the Audioquest Crystal+ speaker wire is from the mid-late 90s... It's essentially multiple cores wound around a 'spacer' in a helix formation.
I used this in a normal (not bi-wired) configuration for many years, but it is ideal for bi-wiring, because the cable contains multiple, insulated cores that can be easily grouped into two pairs and terminated accordingly.
In addition, this particular style of cable has differing gauges of core:
This means that the lighter gauge conductors can be used to carry the high frequency signals for the tweeters, and the remaining heavier gauge conductors can carry the mid/base signal.
With that all stated - there is no need to get a fancy or expensive cable to Bi Wire your kit.
You could just as easily grab two pairs of regular speaker wire, and run one set to your tweets and another set to your mids/woofers. I just had this cable in place, and decided to do it 'all in one'
Then there's the whole other argument about the benefits of bi-wiring, active vs. passive crossovers, etc, etc... ;-)
