Avatar would be better in zero D IMO.

I can see that on a movie worth seeing the effects could be great. Shame that avatar was just a political bitchfest disguised as scifi.

Yes - Everyday viewing
No - Sporting events
Yes - for most movies
No - Gaming

I think gamers will push 3D as a technology, in the same way gamers who brought PS3's pushed Blu-Ray technology as being the standard format.

Gaming = No
Movies at a cinema - No
Movies at home - Yes until the technologies available not requiring glasses.

A guy I knew a while ago purchased some 3d gaming glasses a few years ago... think we were playing COD2 at the time, and he let me have a go with them on his system.... was damn impressive - but for the price, no thanks :)

I vote: "No".

3D is awesome for providing a more 'real' experience. But much use does tend to be at the gimmicky end of the scale...which can detract overall. I think movie makers need to 'mature' into the use of 3D.

Think of an old movie, like "Roman Holiday" with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.

Wouldn't a 1950's Rome now be an incredible spectacle as the backdrop for such a classic love story?
Or how about "Little Big Man" with Dustin Hoffman, set on the American plains if the mid-late 1800's?
Or 2001: A Space Odyssey? Or any of the Star Trek movies or TV series?

Swoon...

Run down your list of favourite dramas, comedies and action movies and it isn't hard to think of how 3D could have enhanced those experiences.

Avatar was classic Cowboys and indians. Invaders attacking indigenous.

That isn't politics. It's the reality of colonial history.

A similar process is underway in Auckland right now...with Rodney Hide's appointees about to bequest the reqion's water resources to their cronies for 35 years, supported by recent government legislation.

It's theft of the commons by conquest every bit as much as anything shown in Avatar.

No.

I've seen Sony and Panasonic's offerings in this space, and I'm going to see Samsung's new product range on Thursday.  It really is a different way to watch TV, and it will be big for gamers (playing Avatar on XBox in 3D was quite an experience).

I also disagree with the comments about poor picture quality.  The 3D plasmas from Panasonic are as clear as anything else HD I've seen, plus they use very little power.
