Bought the 42" version and returned it a week later.
Problems:
1. Remote only worked up to a distance of about 1.5M, even with brand new batteries.
2. Video quality was lack-lustre and hard to adjust.
3. EPG was slow on channel change and hard to read against background at distance.
4. Sound was very tinny; speakers are bottom back of unit.

I have found that the remote is really directional compared to other ones, but it does get across the room if I aim it properly. Harmony was not much better so I assume its the TV end not the remote.

EPG being slow is just a freeview feature. Blame freeview for not allowing TV makers to include their own native EPG. Hard to read? not on the ones I have seen, its the size of TV credits virtually, thats one of my complaints about it is that you see so few things at once because its so big.

Yeah, they are tinny as, turned up loud its painful but you still cant hear things, that's why the lack of a fixed analog line out really *(&*(&*('s me off with it, did the 42 have that since it has more room for sockets? The small ones seem good value, but the larger sizes are so close in value to a better brand.

Can't remember if the 42" had better audio outputs.

As far EPG, it was the fact that each time you changed channel, it had "No Information" set for a few seconds before it gained the current title. Unlike my other Sony, which already has the title. The EPG on its one was the same as any other, which is what you would expect.

The real killer was the remote. At 4M it probably worked 20% of the time on a button press.

The other thing that got to me was their 0800 tech support, where the guy mistook me as a person who had rung earlier about their remote and that person hadn't put the batteries in. As a result I was treated like a complete moron. The best suggestion however, did come from this guy, and that was to return it.

Ah ok, the banner isnt part of the EPG, its the EIT data that makes that happen. To be honest that doesnt really bother me as I am changing channel on the sky.

What does annoy me is the massive delay in changing between HDMI, VGA and the analog tuner. 5 seconds before I get a picture sometimes

Anyone bothered to call the support line to see if they have any firmware upgrades at all? The inbuilt media player keeps crashing, and it has funky HDMI stuff happening which leads to it only working about every 5th time when plugged in thru any form of splitter or extender, the same gear works fine on a vintage samsung.

Another thing that is annoying is when changing channels you get the sound a lot louder for a fraction of a second before the picture starts moving.

I wish that some of the actual brands would sell reasonably priced small TV's since the other 2 that I have had a look at have sucked in the same and other ways as well.

Top brand LCD TVs have never been so cheap. However when you have no name brands, they will often be sold cheaper than the top brands, as price will be their point of difference. I can't comment on the quality of the brand being discussed here as I haven't seen them or tested them, but I have purchased no name brands in the past and often regretted it and you do get what you pay for.

Yeah, but the actual brands either dont have anything in the 22-24" range, or want more for it than a 32 which is absurd. When a PC monitor 24" costs around $200, there is no excuse for a TV being 5-600.

Although a TV display does also have a freeview tuner in it, so you have to add a couple of hundred for that. Plus the top brands probably want to put good quality LCD panels in their screens, as well as better electronics and interfaces which do cost more. They wouldn't want their good names associated with poor quality. I think sony do a 22 inch one, and when stores have 20% off, you can usually get a good deal.I see DSE have a sony 26 inch for around $469 which isn't bad and cheaper than their 22 inch.

dlormans: Hi, if anyone's interested, I just purchased the VEON Blu-ray player.

It is NOT multi zoned for Blu-ray or DVD. No info inside the package on how to hack it. No information on the internet either.

It's very small and cheaply made. Part of the plastic fascia was peeling off. Cheesy "Transonic" -ish blue LED display. Reasonable remote but very small buttons. The front fascia has a row of black plastic buttons that are impossible to decipher unless you have 3D infra-red laser vision.

It boots up very quickly and does not chug and groan when a disc is loaded... but I was unable to verify the image quality as it wouldn't play any of the region 1 and zone a discs I tried. In frustration I packed it up and will return it.

For $149, not worth the money by a long shot. Why the Warehouse promised it would play discs from "any region" is quite beyond me.

You should have looked a little harder. It's the exact same hardware as the Soniq B100 (and several other clones), the codes are the same also. I picked one during the $99.99 WH special a few weeks back.

pros: *BD region change* & DVD region free, clear picture, fast disc loading, cheap, small, relatively quiet, 14W power consumption, uncluttered screen info on play/pause, supports NTFS, so far plays every BD I've tried

cons: slow to turn on, poor remote layout, cheap blue LED display (ultra bright & hard to read), no frame step, no total time display, no image smoothing option (deblock/denoise), poor media player support (also slow to browse and start play), flimsy disc tray, no firmware upgrade site, eject button only works when the unit is on, rubbish manual (use the Soniq B100 one)

As a spare region free BD player, "I'm surprised how much I don't hate it". (to quote Andrew Adamson)
