WITNESS (1985)

Available to Pre-order from Amazon US & Arrow Video Direct: Release Date: March 19th

Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis star as would-be lovers from two different worlds in Witness, director Peter Weir's Academy Award®-winning neo-noir thriller which pits modernity against tradition.

When a young Amish boy inadvertently witnesses a brutal murder while en route to Philadelphia with his recently widowed mother, Rachel (McGillis), Detective John Book (Ford) is assigned to the case. With the perpetrators desperate to silence the sole witness, Book and his two wards are forced to hide out in the heart of the Amish community. As passions between Book and Rachel ignite, the killers close in, culminating in a dramatic, life-and-death clash of cultures that will change the lives of those involved forever.

Noted for its sensitive portrayal of the Amish community, Witness features a career-best performance from Ford, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Fully restored in 4K, Witness proves as timeless as it is masterful.

Looks like Mighty Ape are pulling out of the 4K Ultra HD market. They haven't had any new titles in stock for some time. Out of 171 titles, their available stock count is 26. All the rest are either 2 or 3 week wait or third party sellers.

That leaves us with JBNZ, who themselves are not getting everything that their Australian counterparts have. There is always the bloated Trade Me prices 😮 I think I would rather import than go down that track.

Disney and Sony have just inked a major deal for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to take over all of Disney’s physical media production going forward.

This means that Sony will handle and oversee the actual authoring and compression of discs, that they’ll work with the replicators and packaging vendors, and that they’ll oversee the titles as they go out to the distributors and on to retailers.

  • Once again, we’ve confirmed that Disney is indeed in the process of transitioning to a licensed physical media distribution model via a new agreement with Sony Entertainment.
  • As part of this deal, Sony will market, sell, and distribute new Disney releases plus catalog titles on physical media (4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, etc.) to consumers through retailers and distributors in the U.S. and Canada.
  • This shift is consistent with other strategies that Disney is working to implement company-wide, as exemplified by the company’s recent transitions in other markets.
  • Per usual, Disney regularly evaluates their approach to the physical media market as the home entertainment business and industry at large continue to rapidly evolve alongside consumer behavior.
  • This agreement will allow Disney to continue offering its films and TV shows via physical media retailers and distributors, and most importantly to disc consumers more efficiently.
  • The transition for Disney handing over its physical media operations to Sony has recently commenced and will probably take several month to complete.
  • The first Disney title that will be managed by Sony on physical media will be The First Omen (20th Century Studios), which arrives in theaters on 4/5/24 (digital and physical street dates are TBD will be announced in the coming months).
  • Disney Movie Club (DMC) which serves North America only, will take their last orders on May 20th

For the time being, this deal only applies for the US and Canada, but maybe, just maybe; we will start to get some of these titles distributed by All Interactive Distribution, the Australian company who have taken over Sony/Universal/Paramount distribution in Australasia. Even if we have to import, we can look forward to many of the catalogue titles that have already had a 4K scan, but are sitting on file somewhere in Disney's backrooms. Good news for physical media collector's.

This is great news about the Sony/Disney deal.  Maybe there is a flicker of hope, sometime in the future, that these discs will be available again in Australia/NZ.

I'm pleased to see the word 'catalog' (sic) in there as it's the catalogue titles I'm interested in, particularly those from Twentieth Century Fox.

This has positives but also potential future negatives,

Positives: As you mentioned it opens the door to potential access to the Disney catalogue for the Sony Distributors in AuS/NZ

But the potential downside is the once the deal is done then this becomes a solely commercial $$$ transaction for Disney,

if they see the Revenue tailing off, there is the potential for some bean counter somewhere to yell out "We can make more money ourseilves by just sticking it on Disney+ "  and Disney releases disappear totally - and all it requires  is ending a contract.

Mind you that risk exists now, and is potentially more likely to happen if there is a significant expense is the production of Hard copies vs the revenue from them... although they would have had to disestablish the hard copy production division within Disney ( which is what is happening with this deal)

In Totality is probably a plus for us in this part of the world,
but there are still risks that the studios will exit hard copies totally (or retreat to 4K as a Collectors market similar to Vinyl - with pricing to match...)

Welcome to the Weekly NEW ZEALAND 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release Schedule for Thursday February 22nd.

Finally, a new release in 2024. Five Nights at Freddy's is the one and only release this week. The big news is that Sony will take over the physical media arm of Disney. This means that Sony will handle and oversee the actual authoring and compression of discs, that they’ll work with the replicators and packaging vendors, and that they’ll oversee the titles as they go out to the distributors and on to retailers.  Hopefully this will mean that many more films, especially Fox titles both new and old, will become available on physical media albeit as imports for we Kiwi's. A few new Pre-orders are up on JBAU website, so here's hoping that JBNZ will get most of them as well. Mighty Ape have become almost barren of 4K titles, and sadly, it looks as if they are not stocking anything new.

Click on the post# links for the individual release information (artwork, specs, etc.) where available. Just click on the link and it should take you to the correct post. Then click on the back arrow to return to the schedule.

Release dates are subject to change.

New Releases will be displayed for one week after release date.

Prices quoted from JB Hi-Fi New Zealand (JB) and Mighty Ape NZ (MA) are in NZ Dollars.

Wow, that Once Upon a Time in the West looks fantastic. Goodbye old DVD special edition.

On the state of things...the release schedule for JB Hi-Fi NZ looks bleak, particularly 4k, but they also seem to be going to some effort bringing in all the Imprint and Arrow blu-rays. I read a comment from a staffer on a Facebook page that suggested JB was having to deal with the classifications office itself for releases, so can imagine that's an additional hassle and cost, and possibly heartening that they haven't thrown the towel in yet. I think back a decade when I imported 80% of the records I bought, and now I rarely need to. Vinyl is massive for JB Hi-Fi now, surely they anticipate there's still a market for physical movies. Lavish editions, coloured vinyl, bonus tracks, etc, has been a big part of the draw for records, and expect there would be the same appeal for lovingly produced collector editions.

Absolutely no-one is streaming Godzilla Minus One in NZ. The best I can offer you is that Disney Plus will have it late this year. No dates available yet.

Thanks, I wonder if the Kong vs Godzilla 2 will require me to watch Minus One despite what internet says most probably not. Struggle is real!
