A few more random additions at JB Hi Fi in Palmerston North: 4k Arrow special editions of Carlito's Way (about $75 I think) and Time Bandits, as well as Criterion Collection blu-rays of The Breakfast Club ($65), Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Lord of the Flies, Dead Man (A personal all-time fav movie) and one or two others. All region B of course.

For me the eternal dilemma is that all of them are from recent 4k scans and Criterion could reissue 4k HDR discs before long. I'll swat up on whether the Criterion Dead Man is much of an upgrade on my Madman edition (likely is), but the Criterion price means I'll likely wait until the next sale at Easter.

Sony Pictures have announced a 35th Anniversary SteelBook Edition of GLORY (1989). The film has been restored from the original camera negative and given a new Dolby Vision HDR grade as well as a new Atmos mix. The existing 5.1 and 2.0 mixes will also be included. And all of the legacy Blu-ray special features will carry over as well.

Amazon US haven't got it on their website yet, but you can expect a listing soon. The fact that Sony have three of their recent US SteelBook Editions up for Pre-order at JBAU, gives me hope of an Australian release.

I need to go down to my two Christchurch JB's and have a look to see what I can find.

Just recently released (February 27th) in 4K Ultra HD SteelBook format in the US is the award winning Netflix film ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. The SteelBook does include a Blu-ray, but I can't find anything to say if it's Region A locked. Amazon have it for a very reasonable US$29.99 (Originally US$44.99) and free shipping with an order of US$49 or more.

Spring 1917. 17-year-old Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) and his friends are extremely eager to go to war, to beat the French soundly and march to Paris victorious. This is how the boys imagine it. This is the war they are promised by their principal in a rousing speech. With jubilation, fanfare and song, the "youth of iron" marches off – for Emperor, God and Fatherland.

The enthusiasm, however, does not last long. When they arrive at the Western Front after days of marching. It's pouring rain. The trenches are filling up and fast becoming a swamp. But the French do not wait to attack. Flares rise up, brightening no-man's land with a surreal beauty. Until all hell breaks loose again and the French bombard the trenches.

What follows portrays Paul and his comrades' first-hand experience of how the initial euphoria of war turns into horror, suffering and fear as they desperately fight for their lives in the trenches.

Dolby Vision/HDR10 • Dolby Atmos (German) & DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (English) audio • Subtitles include English standard and hearing impaired • 147 minutes

I don't have a JB Hi Fi where I live, but two weeks ago I was in Palmerston North for the day with work commitments. I checked out JB Hi Fi, and saw a number of 4k imports such as Easy Rider, Stand By Me, The Last Emperor, An American Werewolf in London and a number of other Arrow titles.  I was going to buy a stack of them, only to find my bank card wasn't working at the counter.  Hopefully, I'll get back to Palmerston North around June and check them out again.

Do you recall if they had the Child's Play Collection at all? I'd really love Bride of Chucky in 4k.

Here's an interesting article from The Verge. "The case for 4K Blu-ray in a world of streaming". It'll take you a while to read it all, but I really enjoyed it.

No Chucky collection, sorry. The only 4k horrors I've noticed there (aside from obvious releases like Talk To Me) are the Arrow releases of Demons and Demons 2.

I'm scouting the store almost weekly at the moment, as work nearby. Noticed they've also added the Arrow 4k of Weird Science - bit grating as I bought the blu ray only couple weeks ago there, but 4k is twice the price.

I visited the Welly JB Hi Fi last week. Horrible store. 4k selection is worse, and blu rays are grouped in with standard dvd. Major space problems, so much vinyl stuffed into the stands, you can't flick through them.

Kino Lorber have two old favourites of mine releasing on 4KUltra HD soon. As usual, both titles are available for Pre-order at Amazon US and should also appear on Amazon AU later.

The accompanying Blu-rays are Region A Locked

PAINT YOUR WAGON (1969) March 26th

A raucous western comedy starring screen legends Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin, Paint Your Wagon is punctuated by a classic score by the great Lerner and Loewe, including “They Call the Wind Maria,” “I Talk to the Trees” and “Wand’rin’ Star.” The story of a gold-mining boomtown full of brawny men centers on the work-and-play partnership of prospectors Ben and Pardner (mischievous Marvin and earnest Eastwood). They share everything—the gold, the laughs, the songs…even their wife (spirited Jean Seberg! It’s the musical goldmine of ’69, directed by Joshua Logan, shot by William A. Fraker and adapted for the screen by Paddy Chayefsky!

HIGH NOON (1952) April 16th

Screen legend Gary Cooper won the 1952 Oscar for Best Actor in this classic tale of an aging lawman who stands alone to defend a town of righteous cowards in one of the greatest showdowns in the history of cinema. The movie also marks the first starring role for a beautiful young actress who went on to become one of Hollywood’s most beloved icons—Grace Kelly. Produced by Stanley Kramer, directed by Fred Zinnemann and written for the screen by Carl Foreman, High Noon garnered a total of 4 Academy Awards, including Best Score for Dimitri Tiomkin, and now stands high as one of the most cherished and influential films of all time. Western favorites Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado, Otto Kruger, Lon Chaney Jr., Henry Morgan, Jack Elam and Lee Van Cleef round out the rousing cast.

Here is the artwork for the upcoming DUNE: Part Two SteelBook. This is the US wide release, which is likely to be the same for the Australian release. I have the UK SteelBook for the first film. This is a must have for me.

AN UPDATE ON THE DISNEY/SONY PHYSICAL MEDIA COLLABORATION:

SOURCE: The Digital Bits

"The bad news is that the Disney/Sony deal does not mean a return of Disney product to Australia or other regions where the studio has recently pulled out. Our sources are telling us that this distribution deal applies to the US and Canada only. The studio operation in each individual market is making their own decisions about whether to release physical product there or not, and this deal doesn’t change that."

"The good news, on the other hand, is that I’m told Disney remains committed to physical media distribution. And while Disney will continue to make the decisions about which titles get released on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD, those decisions will now be made in partnership with Sony, with the goal of maximizing availability based on consumer and retail interest."

"That certainly suggests that Sony’s recent experience in choosing catalog titles for release on 4K Ultra HD especially should come into play. And Sony decision-makers must certainly be aware that the Disney, Fox, Touchstone, and Hollywood Pictures libraries contain many great titles that are greatly in demand by cinephiles, physical media collectors, and AV and home theater enthusiasts."

Watch this space...

Sounds promising!

I saw Dune Part II the other night at the Queen St IMAX and it was a stunning assault on the senses!

I will be ordering it on 4K BR.

On another note, has anyone heard any rumblings about the Godzilla Minus One movie releasing down here? I missed it at the theatres and read it was very good.

Cheers
