No its not illegal. This has been discussed many times here on geekzone. At worst you breaking the Netflix and Hulu T&C. But you not breaking any NZ law.
There can be many legitimate reasons as to why you would want to use other DNS services. Your ISP has no right to block you from doing this.
I suggest you get back to them and tell them its your right to use whatever DNS provider you choose. Its not their business as to why you need to change the DNS settings.
as an update i emailed the CEO as i was fed up with waiting for a reply and was told she had her tech guys looking into how they could allow me access to do this. later i got an email saying -
The technicians have advised that you don't actually need access to the router to subscribe to their service. By going to the provider you can get help from them and their forums. Again I wish to convey to you that this sort of site is not supported by us and if anything should happen to the settings on the router there will be a tech charge. When we troubleshoot we will confirm the link to the subscriber unit is working but if you lose your internet connection that will not be guaranteed by us.
i replied with a copy of the email back from unblock who said -
The Roku 3 has no option to enter our DNS or to change it's DNS settings. It has to be done in your router and if your router cannot also be changed then it would not be possible to use our service. The setup is done either in your router only or in your devices separately.
nearly always comes back to money. i said i wias prepared to pay tech fees if there was a problem once the router was changed but still dont want to help.

double click on tcp/ip, ipv4 i think it calls it
dns should be at the bottom of that window, change it from auto to say 8.8.8.8
I'm on my phone not in from of PC, but that should be close enough for you to follow nose.

I'm happy to give my opinion on the matter. As said previously there are plenty of legitimate reasons as to why you could want to use another DNS service. Your ISP should not control which DNS service you make use of.
Nathan you are a legend....everything online works fine with unblockus and streaming from netflix. i cant get to the roku3 as pesky kids are watching tv!
do you suggest i change the settings when not using roku etc or is it ok to just leave as is?
aaagh the roku player refuses to believe it is in the states even though unblockus is up and running fine on the pc. on the roku website account it adds channels fine as if everything is ok there but as soon as you fire up the roku from a factory reset it says the services arent provided in your region.
That's because the roku is getting the dns from the router and not the pc where you entered the unblock-us IP. The only way you can get roku to work is via the router. You need access to that router to make the roku work.
Could use Xbox 360 or PS3 as they let you change dns IP in the console itself to make Netflix, Hulu plus work.
stagcostumes: will give it a go with isp provider, unfortuantely there is no alternative provider that has decent speed.

I think you should be able to add another router, but you would end up double NATing. You would need to connect the WAN port of the second router to a LAN port of the existing router, then enter the DNS you want into the second router. You would then connect the Roku3 to the second router. A bit of a kludge, but I think it should work
