Just to clarify, the box has 4tuners in it, as too how many are available is a matter of firmware implementation.

It's a quad tuner device. 2 tuners exclusively for recording, 1 exclusively for viewing and the 4th used to push content including box office movies to the drive for instant playback rather than waiting.

On Newstalk ZB's talk Tuesday show, there was an interview with Tony O'Brien (Director of Communications - Sky TV) who was talking about the the new HD box.

A couple of quick questions about MySkyHD I wonder if anyone knows the answer to.

1. I have heard that the quality of HD over Satellite is considerably lower than Terestrial HD due to bandwidth constraints. Does anyone know how noticeable the difference will be between FreeviewHD and SkyHD and how this difference can be quantified?

2. Will there be any quality degradation when broadcast material is saved to the MySkyHD harddisk? I was wondering whether there might be some lossy compression involved to increase the amount of data that can be stored on the disk.

Which makes me think of 2 more questions.

3. How big will the MySkyHD disk?

4. How many hours of material can be saved on it?

Most of this can't be confirmed until we have an active service, or atleast more information from Sky.

1. Not strictly true, it all depends on the resolutions and bit rates Sky decides to use. Based on their SD signals I'd expect them to be poorer than freeview|HD but they might just suprise us.

2. There shouldn't be. The PVR units simply copy the broadcast bit stream.

3. Expected to be 320Gig based on the foxtel units but some of it will be reserved for on demand and other services.

4. Dependent on 1, but HD will probably be about 4-5 Gig/hr. Don't forget you are likely to be recording a mix of HD + SD services.

I currently have my sky box feeding all the tvs in the house so they can watch the currently viewed tv channel, How will this work with the mySKY HDi ? Will it have a RF out for feeding all the other tvs? What contents will come through this, will HD channels just show no picture or will they be downscaled? Will it be possible to watch a HD channel on LCD via hdmi at the same time as viewing it in SD via RF Out?

If watching recorded tv what will the RF Out show ? the recorded tv or the live tv? (presumably the same as current mySKY - so someone with a mysky could answer this)

The MySky HDi has no RF output, however it does have component, S-Video, composite. The latter two will always output regardless of what res the viewed channel as (ie it provides a parallel downscale regarless of what goes out HDMI). The component output will output the same 576i if the ICT flag is engaged otherwise full HD. From all comments sofar ICT will be invoked.

So you could use a seperate modulator (ie old VCR) to feed an RF feed of composite around your home.

Ok that seems to make sense, i could easily enough use my VCR to feed the RF to the rest of the tv's.

Modifying the above question now makes it: What is shown by the composite feed to the vcr when viewing recorded tv off the hard drive of the mySKY / HDi ?

Also is there a special deal to keep your current sky box when upgrading to mysky or mysky HDi? or do they simply replace your current sky box and if you want to keep it, it would be standard multi room ($25 a month ) fee?

There is only ever on decoded signal, so if you are playing something previously recorded off disc it will appear on all outputs.

Sky have not released their "deal" as yet, so its a wait and see.
