your the smart one, so many bugs in it. one of my 3 shields is useless, kernel panic. another one has no HDMI sync to the tv on wake up intermittantly.

Thanks for that info, you are doing God's work. I had planned to upgrade it today but will put it off.

I saw the announcement that the Nvidia Shield was back in stores and promptly dropped a wad of notes on one.

I see it has Chromecast built in. Is that Ultra equivalent? Or worse or better?

well the ultra only has a 100mbit ethernet whereas the SHIELD is a true gigabit device, so its instantly better in that respect.

some software things dont work on the SHIELD chromecast like specific settings you might set in the HOME app for it, with types of pictures, temp etc

i sold my ultra has soon as i bought the SHIELD.

@dan  Thank you. I guess I can now give my old CCU to my Dad for his birthday later this month, just what every 80y old needs! I actually think he might use it.

I'm thinking about getting a Nvidia Shield TV and have a few questions to ask before I consider buying it. My main reason for buying it is to set it up as a Plex Media Server with my hard drive connected to the Nvidia Shield so I can view my media on multiple devices simultaneously.

1. a) I have an external hard drive that has all my media. If I were to connect my external hard drive to the Nvidia Shield would I be able to copy files from my PC to the external hard drive that is connected to the Nvidia Shield?

    b) Would I then be able to change Plex Media Server library to my external hard drive so I could watch on multiple devices   simultaneously.?

2. What Android TV NZ apps are available on Nvidia Shield?

3. Is it easy to sideload apps to Nvidia Shield and how would I do this?

4. I heard that there will be a new Nvidia Shield coming out soon. Should I wait for it or buy the current version now?

1. (a) Yes, you can share the drive on the Shield and copy them over the network

    (b) Yes

2. Don't know, there isn't really much on that I like, and that I do like I use Plex DVR to record OTA and process the adverts out using ComSkip (Requires Plex Pass and HD Homerun tuner)

3. Yes, using one of the file explorer apps, but be aware Android TV is different to Android. If you load Android apps you will often need a mouse pointer to click on buttons, and the app may think it's in portrait, or just not work at all.

4. I don't think there is a massive difference, the new one is a bit faster but the current model is already faster than it needs to be for using Plex

Would I run Plex server on the Shield? -No way. By the time you hang an ugly USB drive out the back of it you've ruined it's killer feature -making it lounge friendly.

2. TVNZ only. No TV3 or prime. Skygo can be sideloaded but pretty dodgy as needs touch input.

4. Why not.... new version sure ot be faster , future proof as current version 100% does everything right now.

If I didn't use a Nvidia Shield to run my Plex Media Server what should I use instead. The reason of getting it so I don't have to leave my PC running 24/7 and waste electricity?

I guess it's a matter of scale, complexity, and aesthetics. The Shield has hardware accelerated H.264 transcoding and is very capable. If you don't mind an external HDD it will probably work for you. I am already invested in an Intel NUC server performing a variety of functions, with RAID protected storage, so for me it was the logical place to run PMS.

One other thing, with my brief investigation with running the Shield as a server I did notice I also had this problem:

I quickly abandoned it so I didn't really give it a proper shot at troubleshooting it.

Thanks for telling me about this. If the Plex Media Server does go to sleep on the Nvidia Shield I guess there's no point on getting one then. I might consider going through the NUC route

i have never seen that issue so i doubt its widespread

there is a setting on the SHIELD to make it never sleep under Screensaver

perhaps you had CEC setup and it was putting it to sleep when the tv was off or similar.

if your plan it to buy a NUC and run PMS and a plex client on it, say goodbye to HDR. the SHIELD would be alot cheaper option than a NUC.

i recently sold my 2 older nucs and replaced with with SHIELDS, no regrets at all, (until i installed 8.0.0 on them now i have a boat load of regrets :)

Since the 8.0.0 install

Main SHIELD in Living Room 3 times crashed and burned kernal panic immediatly after ending playback

Bedroom SHIELD - intermittant no video sync to Samsung TV on wake up

Main and bedroom SHIELD  remote does not respond for AGES after restarting powercycling

and even a factory reset of the SHIELD

and then more issues the same as everyone else

VC1 is broken, AV1 is broken. youtube no longer in 4k  (even tho it says its in 4k), viewport says differently
