Hey all,

Hmmmmm well that didnt quite go the way I was hoping it would. Had the upgrade on my DTH-335-4 go though last night and so set up the component cable with scart to component adaptor, set up the Sky menu for component on TV scart output and lo and behold..... no pic.... ran the cables from the dvd player in to the scart plug and used that receiver input but nothing there either....

My only thoughts are that maybe the component input on the receiver wasnt assigned to that input, but it was... Or maybe there is a problem with the plug... humph....grumpy now

Hi Steve,

That sounds very odd. Can I suggest that you check to make sure you "saved" your settings when you re-configured the scart plugs. What happens if you go back to your old cables (eg svideo or composite) on the TV scart? If you get a normal picture, then for sure, it can't be sending component.

Remember you must go all the way through the setup process, including setting the VCR scart plug. At that point you should be asked to confirm that you want to change your settings. I imagine you would be setting component for the TV scart, and Svideo for the VCR scart.

Hey Steve,

I don't know anything about your decoder, but the only way I could think of this happening is the Scart adapter isn't wired the same as the sky box, or the scart adapter is plugged into the Video scart instead of the tv scart - they aren't labelled on the back of my Sky box, and in fact i had been using the video scart all along for my TV all the time I had been using Sky before this change.

Also, if your using an Adaptor rather than an all-in-one cable, check its set to "out", some adaptors have a small switch to select which pins to use manually... just a thought.

I've been waiting for my 335-4 to update too - no luck yet :/ (everythings connected - RJ-11 & ADSL filter)... wait and hope.

Pass.

I thought it was satellite too, but when it didn't go through after the "scheduled" update I wondered if it was because at the time the phone cable wasn't connected.

I'll check again tomorrow, it's not on the same property, it's probably just the timming.

Firmware updates are set via the satellite DVB stream, you do not require you phone line to be connected to receive them.

Also, I suspect that along with which hardware platform version is being sent at anyone time they can also control batches or groups of serial no's in anyone download (that occupies a 20odd minute period), Manaia may be able to shed light on that one, but I guess they do put some limit on the number of STB's upgrading at any moment to save overload at call centres from angry customers. Not too sure on this last one.

Also Component video as with RGB video on SCART has no direction sense, this only applies to composite and S-Video. The adapators for Component video have no switch, they can be an in or an out depending of if a sender device (ie STB) or a recieve device (ie TV/display).

No - all decoders of any particular type are told to update at once.

Thanks for clarifing that, something from the major update (that included the openTV middleware) made me think that you could contrain the update population at any point.

By the way several folk have commented to me (not via the forum) that they like the WSS feature, makes using panel displays a lot easier, should have been there from day one.

WSS = Wide Screen Signalling. This is a digital code that is sent on line 23 of the composite or Y(luma) channel to the TV/Display from the STB, it is outside the normally visible picture area, although on a CRT TV if the vertical height or position is wrong then you may see a white flicking line at the top of the screen.

Most moderm WideScreen TVs/Displays can decode this signal, they often have a "Auto" display mode, the WSS signal tells the display if the current picture is a 16:9 or 4:3 picture. Compatible displays will then display in correct 16:9 or in an elected 4:3 mode. Often when setting up a compatible TV/Display the "Auto" mode can be confiqured to display 4:3 material as either stretched to fill the entire 16:9 screen (yuck), or pillerbox it as a correct 4:3 picture with side bars. 16:9 material would naturally be set to fill the entire screen.

A correctly setup SCARTed TV will use pin8 for the same purpose, however line 23 WSS is the standard for signalling on the video signal.

Hello

I checked mine and its 0340 for a DTH 335-4 This happened last night for me.

To be honest I cant see any differance and I have scart only so the componet setup does not worry me.
Wifey cant see any differance either.

Made the change to component last night and noticed a sharper image straight away - I'm using the gold adaptor from DSE ($20) and some AR gold cables ($89) also from DSE on a Sony HX32 32" widescreen.

Made the change while Susan Wood was doing her thing and once the switch was made the wife piped up and said "hey the picture looks heaps better" You know your onto a winner when the wife notices.
