For better or worse we settled on  55" Samsung S90C. $2394, down from ~ $3400 with an original price of ~ $5100. Apparently the QD-OLED screen gives a better picture than the LG C3 plus the Samsung was about $300 cheaper.

Will see how bad the Tizen OS is, seems that is an issue for some.

Asked whether there were issues with cleaning the screen since there had been comments on here about issues cleaning Samsung screens. Was assured there wasn't any issues, perhaps that is confined to earlier screen models.

Hard to understand how OS are still a concern on todays tvs.
Some are suggesting an android box is still an improvement. I'm looking at replacing my 55" plasma dinasoar with this Samsung. Should i be concerned with this OS

Haven't taken delivery yet, so cannot offer an opinion.

Apparently this model has the later version of the OS which is better. Also I think it is probably a personal choice thing. I also saw criticism of LG's WebOS.

One thing that was a selling point for me for an LG TV was WebOS as I liked WebOS on the HP tablet. Having said that the implementation on the TV will in all probability be vastly different.

My thinking on the OS is that while it's necessary for you to be able to access the functions and features it's not the core function of the TV like it is on a phone, tablet or computer. You use the OS pretty well all the time on these while on a TV it's probably less than 1% of the time. I'm more interested in the picture/audio quality and features rather than how smooth the OS is.

The OS on most TVs is only adequate. The processors are typically underpowered to run the image processor plus smart features. Even if it’s ok today it probably won’t be in a couple of years. The more proprietary it is the worse it will probably become, especially in New Zealand where app support can be spotty.

LG generally aren’t too bad, although the UI has nothing to do with the origins of WebOS.

With the cost of a Chromecast with Google TV or a Firestick it’s no big deal. An Apple TV or Nvidia shield will give you a much much better experience but they cost a bit of money.

I viewed the LG 3G 55" today. Its another $1200 over the 55" Samsung S90 but it is a step up in image quality. Tempting.

Personal experience from LG’s webos on a C1, you don’t need to use it if you don’t want to. Pre-installed apps like netflix will work and update normally without logging in but if you want anything more then it will force you to sign up. The config of the device itself etc. is all in a separate menu not behind webos.

Eek, this thread is huge. I have a question asked on behalf. My brother wants to replace the 10yr tv in his second lounge. Size, 50-55". Main requirement is image quality so does he get LCD, LED, QLED? They mean nothing to me so any recommendations on best technology and good brands and models?

I know that's a broad request but appreciate any suggestions.

The usual answer is an OLED/QD OLED but does he have the budget and a suitable room for an OLED?

If it’s a really bright room a QLED or mini LED may be more suitable.

Thanks, budget is not an overriding issue. The room is relatively small and tv viewing is normally at night so artificial lighting.
Thanks.

well then, Samsung S90 or S95, LG C3 or G3, Panasonic MZ or Sony A95 will suit the bill in 55"

My suggestion would be make sure you check out the LG G3 before you buy anything. Best picture currently out there in my opinion.

Noel leeming, JB's and Harvey Norman have the LG C3 65" OLED for $2995-$2999.

Harvey Norman are concurrently running a GEM Visa promo ($100 gift card for every $1,000 spent - up to $1,000 gift card total), so for this particular model you would receive a $200 gift card with purchase using GEM (or $300 gift card if you add in something worth at least $5 to the sale).

Some comments on Cheapies

With GEM, note that there is a $55 establishment fee and $55 annual fee.
