to link up the routers as you suggested the only way i can do this is to buy a RJ11-RJ45 cable which i couldnt get locally but can online.

is this what you had in mind?

Roku 3 setup

I've just had my Roku 3 delivered to me at work. Will be setting it up later this evening, but want to check a few things first.

[Ordered Sunday 21/04 9PM, sent via i-service (not DHL), received 30/04 - not bad considering the weekends and public holiday]

The main function of the device is to bring Plex onto my Panasonic LED TV. Access to US sites like Netflix and Hulu+ is something I will not be considering just yet. However, I will probably take this up at some stage in the future. So what are the simple steps I should take now to prepare for it? For instance, should I register a US Roku account now even though I don't have a VPN/DNS service? Can I use a US Roku account from NZ - for Plex (not Netflix, etc.)

Or should I not worry, just reset my Roku 3 when I'm ready to get into VPN's and DNS changing services, etc.

There have been a few posts on the various steps to get the Roku working with Netflix, etc. but not one of them has mentioned an Orcon Genius account and modem - so I intend to research a bot further before doing Netflix/Hulu. When I eventually get there, hope the anti-geo-blocking measures are still effective. If anyone has any similar experience, I'd like to hear about it.

Setup a US Roku account using the VPN/DNS service else the account will considered a NZ one.

Do whatever you want to do man.

If you can configure the DNS settings of this router, then you should be able to use Unblock-US or Unotelly to watch US content.

As an aside it's probably much easier than the Technicolor DSL modem/router than Telecom provides where you have to telnet to the router and use CLI to add custom DNS addresses!

Looking serious at the Roku 3. I mainly want it to steam movies from my pc and music library.

What are the main adavantages of having it over the WD Live TV?

How are you guys finding yours now you have had it for a little while?

I've got mine for the same reasons as you are considering it. I have my media stored on external drives attached to my desktop and the Roku is used to play on the TV in conjunction with Plex. It has been simple to setup and even easier to use. I like that metadata is scrapped automatically. The menu system is good (apparently an improvement over earlier versions).

I have experienced some instances where the video file has to be loaded (in the middle of playback, even when the desktop is not being used.) Usually, this occurs when the video file is large, 1080p x264 encoded in mkv/mp4 container. I have tried playing these files off a USB stick attached to the ROku and have had the same problem. Plugging the same USB directly into the TV resolves this issue. For most video files, this is not an issue.

I also use Plex on other devices (Samsung TV, android phones and tablet) and have not looked into the WD Live device in detail.

The WDTV Live would actually be a much better bet for what you want - natively supports network shares and windows media player libraries and plays damn near anything. You can also just plug a USB HDD into it and watch everything.

Roku would offer Netflix and other streaming services (with a VPN) but would require you install Plex Server onto whatever is hosting your media. WDTV can do netflix etc but is sluggish at all hell.

I hope the support for the WDTV Live products has improved. My experience with the original WDTV Live was terrible - full of bugs which were completely ignored by WD.

It's a frustrating regular occurrence in this industry. I love my Boxee Box but that too has now been abandoned by Boxee after numerous broken promises.

I'm currently experimenting with XBMC on Raspberry Pi and finding it promising and working very well with Plex servers. Doesn't do Netflix though.

Where's a good place to get a US to NZ adapter for my Roku? I can only find NZ to US ones on the interwebz

Ok my Roku is on the way via amazon.

Now I need a VPN. Which one of Unblock-US or Unotelly works best with the US tv services like netflix etc
What else will I need? Any other tricks to know about?

Secondly, Do I need a wirelees N router? I currenty have an old netgear and its only wireless A+B. My internet connection is around 13 Mbps. I think my wireless is limited to 10mbs. My PC is wired so it doesn't phase me.

I use UnoTelly as well as its $12/ year cheaper than Unblock-us and dishtvworld only works with unotelly. No issues with Netflix or Hulu+

I use the Roku 3 on a wired connection.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Does Unotelly allow you to use it on any IP so you can use it at a friend's house or on the road?

For example for Unblock I often use it on my tablet on the road by tethering my phone and setting the DNS addresses in my tablet to be Unblocks. Then when I fire up a browser and go to Unblock it detects an IP change, sets the new IP and I am away.
