richms: Any way of getting a legit beta of this at all? I am too dubious to pick it up off p2p.

Also how does it handle dual booting? Problems getting it to coexist with vista on the same machine?

The beta of this will be released to the general public later this month

Regs: there was talk of windows 7 handling the mkv container by default - does this work or do you have to install a splitter like haali still?

DIVX/XVID yes by default

MKV - no

I have been using the Win 7 7000 beta for a week or so and must say I am impressed generally. Sure the guide doesn't work yet, it is only a beta so I am happy to wait for this. As far as general system stability goes it is excellent, my family are using this as their main media center and with school holidays it is geting a real work out. Far to say the Wife Acceptance Factor (WAF) is high.

Live TV - well this is also quite stable mostly, TV3 sometimes gets a little jitter, though not enough to stop watching. Oddly though, if I start Live TV from within the MC interface it usually responds with a No TV Signal. However, if I start Live TV from the normal desktop i.e. jump from desktop to Live TV without opening the MC interface first, it works perfectly each time.

Blu-ray - well I wasn't expecting native support for Blu-ray movies and don't expect it anytime soon, PowerDVD works fine.

There are many other improvements that bring a smile, however the main game was to get Freeview HD support and this is well on the way. Next step is to install an SSD at the end of the month and wait for the Release Candidate.

I just used the latest ones for Vista from their site. This was with Build 6502. Worked fine for DVB-T.

Can't say the same for my GT8500 card. I don't believe I could get the hardware acceleration working - as I had done under XP.

Thats what I had done, and the drivers do install fine, but in build 7000 it doesn't detect the card in Media Centre, haven't tried any other builds so not sure if it is something I am doing wrong, or its no longer supported

Microsoft have released build 7000 beta to MSDN and Technet Plus subscribers as of the 9th Jan.

downloading now and will see how it goes as a VM.

I am installing Windows 7 on my Mac Mini running Windows Vista MCE.

From what I've seen on Windows 7 Pre beta (the preview code distributed to PDC) it worked ok with the HVR-900 USB DVB-T on my laptop. Let's see on this now...

I am at work but have had time to log into home and setup the VM since the download finished this morning at about 9.

edit: Also before playing MP3's MS recommend installing update KB961367.

And the reason for this is.........cos I know you will ask.

MP3 files When MP3 files are added (either manually or automatically) to either the Windows Media Player or the Windows Media Center library, or if the file metadata is edited with Windows Explorer, several seconds of audio data may be permanently removed from the start of the file. This issue occurs when files contain thumbnails or other metadata of significant size before importing or editing them. To avoid this, take the following steps: To protect your MP3 files 1. Before you install this Beta release, back up all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer, including those on removable media or network shares. 2. Install the Beta release of Windows 7; then install this update (KB961367). If you do not want to install the update, you can avoid this issue by setting all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer to read-only before starting either Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center or before editing MP3 metadata with Windows Explorer. To do this, in Windows Explorer, find the files, right-click them, click the General tab, and then select the Read-only check box. Once you have installed the update, you can safely reset the read/write status of your MP3 files to your preference.

I have the Beta on a VM, would it be worth the effort of backing up my media center PC with home server and installing the beta as a live system?

I would only be using it for freeview HD, record tv, music, and videos (dvd/bluray). I suppose I just want to know if it is stable enough to use on a daily basis yet and keep the wife happy who is now home fulltime about to pop our first baby out.

Hi

I replied to this but it disappeard so excuse me if this appears twice.

I have been using this (along with my wife and 4 year old) for a few weeks now.

It requires a sattelite connection for a guide and is a little complicated to set up. It misses some recodings occasionally.

Dont get me wrong, it is so close it is great but with a new baby I don't know if you want the hassle.

Especially if your wife will be wanting to watch recorded TV when feeding th baby at all hours.

It all depends how confortable you are with beta software. This is not production software. There are faults and probably some hidden bugs. If you are not participating on the beta or not prepared to report bugs and spend time testing things then it's better to wait for when the final product is officially out.

Very nice indeed. Installed as an upgrade on top of Windows Vista SP1, it recognised the HVR-900 USB DVB-T, had no problems finding all Freeview channels and it's working fine.

Some applications don't work (CloneCD needs an update, LogMeIn won't connect) but those are known compatibility problems.

The Microsoft Media Keyboard and the Micosoft MCE Remote are working fine.

Otherwise all seems to be good. Doing a backup now then configuring the libraries.
